In the first Associated Press men's basketball poll of the regular season, the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks maintained their position at No. 1, receiving 51 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel. However, the rest of the AP Top 25 saw significant movement, with teams shifting positions based on their early-season performances.

Moving up to the second spot was Purdue, which secured two easy wins and earned seven first-place votes. Arizona made a remarkable jump from No. 12 to No. 3 after an impressive victory against Duke, securing three first-place votes in the process.

Marquette climbed one spot to No. 4, closely followed by defending national champion UConn, which earned a first-place vote and rounded out the top five. Notably, James Madison secured a historic first-ever appearance in the poll at No. 24 after a thrilling overtime victory over Michigan State.

Arizona's rise in the rankings can be attributed to their successful outing against Duke. Entering the season as somewhat of an unknown, Coach Tommy Lloyd's squad impressed with a 78-73 road victory over the Blue Devils, firmly establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

Meanwhile, James Madison University has been steadily improving under the leadership of coach James Byington. From 13 wins in his first season in 2020-21 to 22 wins last year, the Dukes showcased their continued growth by pulling off a stunning upset against the fourth-ranked Michigan State Spartans. T.J. Bickerstaff's clutch performance, including a tying shot in regulation, propelled the Dukes to a 79-76 overtime victory. This triumph marked James Madison's first-ever entry into the AP Top 25 since transitioning to Division I in 1976.

Alongside the Dukes, the Colorado Buffaloes also made their way into the AP Top 25 this week, settling in at No. 25 following convincing wins over Towson and Grambling State. Conversely, San Diego State experienced a precipitous fall from their previous position at No. 17 after suffering a nine-point loss to BYU. Additionally, Saint Mary's dropped out of the rankings after a home loss to Weber State, falling from No. 23.

Notable changes in this week's poll include Florida Atlantic's inclusion in the preseason top 10, riding the momentum of their surprising Final Four run last season. Despite returning a majority of their roster, the Owls faced a tough challenge in Loyola Chicago but emerged victorious with a 75-62 win to remain in the top 10.

The preseason favorites Michigan State and Duke both experienced significant drops in the rankings. The Spartans plummeted 14 spots to No. 18 after their loss to James Madison, while the Blue Devils fell to No. 9.

As the season progresses, these rankings are sure to continue shifting as teams prove their worth on the court. The next AP men's basketball poll will provide further insight into the evolving landscape of college basketball and the teams that will vie for the top honors in the 2023-24 season.
