In what promises to be an exhilarating matchup, the Miami Dolphins are headed to Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium this weekend to take on the Chiefs in the Super Wild Card Weekend. While facing the formidable Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs is already a daunting task, the weather conditions in Kansas City will make this game even more challenging for both teams.
According to Weather.com, Saturday's forecast for this section of Missouri predicts bone-chilling conditions, with a high of 12 degrees and a low of -5 degrees. The National Weather Service expects the temperature at kickoff to be around 5 degrees, with a wind chill of -10 degrees. If these conditions hold, it could potentially be the coldest playoff game that either team has ever played in.
For the Dolphins, the freezing temperatures do not bode well. They have struggled in games where the kickoff temperature dips below 40 degrees, having lost 10 straight such games – the longest active streak in the NFL. Suddenly, their recent matchup against the Buffalo Bills, which took place in significantly warmer weather, feels like a crucial missed opportunity.
Miami's quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, who had an impressive regular season with a league-leading 4,624 passing yards, has struggled during his coldest starts. In fact, he has lost all five of his previous starts in similar conditions, completing only 57% of his passes, throwing five touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Interestingly, Tagovailoa's performance seems to be affected by temperature. He holds a record of 6-13 in games played under 70 degrees but an impressive 23-4 record in games with temperatures of 70 degrees or higher. As he prepares to make his first postseason start, it remains to be seen how he will fare in these frigid conditions.
The last time these two teams met was in November in Germany, where the Chiefs secured a 21-14 victory. Kansas City dominated the first half, scoring all 21 of their points, while the Dolphins failed to put any points on the board. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill played a significant role for the Chiefs with eight receptions for 62 yards, while the Dolphins struggled with just 292 yards of total offense.
As kickoff approaches on Saturday night, all eyes will be on Kansas City's Arrowhead Stadium to witness this clash in freezing temperatures. With home field advantage and a significant weather advantage, the Chiefs are poised to make this a challenging playoff test for the visiting Dolphins.
