In a surprising turn of events, Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has reportedly been offered a massive contract extension worth $125 million over 10 years. However, there is a catch. Harbaugh would be prohibited from pursuing or accepting an NFL job for the 2024 season.

The details of the offer were revealed by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. It is unclear whether the "far shorter" alternative agreement, paying $11 million per year, also includes a clause restricting Harbaugh's NFL prospects in 2024.

Harbaugh, whose current contract with Michigan runs until 2026, has been coy about his future plans. Although the NFL coaching carousel is set to start spinning in the coming weeks, rumors have already emerged that Harbaugh has received interest from teams anticipating future vacancies, as well as those that already have openings, such as the Chargers, Raiders, and Panthers.

Considering Harbaugh's previous stint as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014, it would be wise for him to quietly explore his NFL options before making a commitment that would sideline him for the 2024 season. After all, if the prospect of returning to the NFL is not on Harbaugh's agenda, there should be no harm in promising not to pursue an opportunity.

In recent years, Harbaugh has been linked to NFL coaching positions, having been interviewed for jobs during the past two offseasons. Last year, he traveled to Minnesota to meet with the Vikings, and in a unique twist, Broncos owner Greg Penner even went to Michigan to interview Harbaugh.

Interestingly, the Chargers job that Harbaugh reportedly desired last year did not become vacant. However, this year, the Chargers position is available, and it seems like a logical fit for Harbaugh to potentially join forces with the team.

As Harbaugh navigates this decision, fans, analysts, and sports enthusiasts alike will be eagerly waiting to see if he ultimately chooses to commit to a lucrative long-term extension with Michigan, or if he explores the tantalizing possibilities that the NFL may offer.

It remains to be seen whether Harbaugh will keep his options open or if he will opt for the financial stability and loyalty to Michigan that a $125 million contract provides.
