Iowa Hawkeyes' star player Caitlin Clark is reported to be in good health after being knocked down by a fan during Ohio State's court-storming celebration following their upset victory on Sunday. The 18th-ranked Buckeyes triumphed over the No. 2 Hawkeyes in overtime, pulling off a 100-92 win on their home court at Value City Arena.
As the game concluded, jubilant Ohio State fans flooded the court before the Iowa players could leave for the locker room. In the midst of the chaos, one fan inadvertently collided with Clark, causing her to spin and fall to the ground. While the fan quickly regained their composure and joined in the celebration, Clark remained on the court, in pain.
Thankfully, Clark's teammates and Iowa officials rushed to her aid. Although she was initially doubled over in pain, she eventually rose to her feet and left the court with the assistance of her teammates and a police officer, heading towards the tunnel.
Following the incident, an Iowa spokesperson assured reporters that Clark had not sustained any injuries from the collision, providing some relief after the distressing scene unfolded. Clark herself confirmed her welfare and revealed that Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith had personally apologized to her for the incident.
Clark shared her experience, highlighting the immense crowd and exciting atmosphere during the game. She expressed understanding towards the court-storming tradition and how it was a significant win for the Buckeyes. However, the sudden collision left her shaken and took the wind out of her, posing a potential risk of serious injury. Fortunately, her teammates swiftly rallied around her, ensuring her safety.
The fan involved in the collision and any potential consequences they may face have not been addressed in initial reports. Nevertheless, this incident has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding safety protocols for fans storming sports fields and courts after home victories.
Despite the unfortunate incident, Clark's performance on the court was outstanding. She scored an impressive 45 points, along with seven assists and three rebounds, shooting 12-of-25 from the field and 7-of-18 from beyond the arc. Clark's remarkable career has seen her lead the Hawkeyes to the national championship game last season and position herself close to breaking the all-time NCAA Division I women's scoring record. Currently, she stands at 3,351 career points, just 176 points shy of the record held by former Washington guard Kelsey Plum, who accumulated 3,527 points.
While Clark's pursuit of the record and her overall well-being faced a moment of uncertainty due to the careless actions of an Ohio State fan, the resilient athlete remains focused on the game and finding ways to improve.
As the incident prompts discussions on fan conduct and athlete safety, it serves as a reminder of the need for proper guidelines and measures to ensure the well-being of players during celebratory moments.
