In a surprising development, two highly touted freshmen from the University of Memphis, guard Mikey Williams and wing JJ Taylor, have decided to enter the transfer portal. According to a source confirmed by 247Sports, the former high school teammates are keen on finding a new destination together, if possible.

Mikey Williams, one of the most renowned high school players in recent years, had been listed on the Memphis roster all season but did not make any appearances for the team. This was primarily due to him dealing with legal matters in his hometown of San Diego. In November, Williams pleaded guilty to a gun charge stemming from a shooting incident that took place in March 2023. His guilty plea entails meeting certain conditions, including behavioral therapy, gun safety, anger management classes, and completing 80 hours of community service.

Standing at 6-feet-2, Williams is an explosive combo guard and was ranked as the 39th player in the class of 2023. He was known for his exceptional scoring abilities during his senior year at San Ysidro High School, demonstrating the capability to finish above the rim, play through physical contact, and shoot with range from beyond the arc.

With over 3.6 million followers on Instagram, Williams has amassed a significant social media following and is expected to be a highly sought-after player in the transfer portal. Despite facing scrutiny due to his off-court controversies, there is no denying his talent and potential impact in the right setting.

JJ Taylor, also a four-star prospect coming out of high school, ranked 136th in the final Top-150 for the class of 2023. Hailing from Chicago, Taylor joined Williams in California for their senior year and subsequently chose to play for Memphis. As a versatile 6-foot-8 small forward, he showcased athleticism and demonstrated potential as a slashing finisher, capable of making open jump shots.

Currently serving a suspension, Taylor appeared in three games for Memphis this season, each for a mere two minutes. Coach Penny Hardaway confirmed the suspension, but further details were not provided.

The decision of Williams and Taylor to enter the transfer portal has undoubtedly sent shockwaves through the college basketball community. As two promising freshmen, their search for a new destination will likely attract significant attention, and numerous programs will be eager to secure their services.
