Hawkeyes Dominate Nebraska, Extend Winning Streak in Big Ten Opener
In an impressive display of skill and determination, the third-ranked University of Iowa men's wrestling team emerged victorious over sixth-ranked Nebraska in their Big Ten opener. The Hawkeyes secured their 15th consecutive win against the Huskers with a final score of 22-10. With one bonus point win and six ranked victories, Iowa left little doubt of their dominance on the mat.
Head coach Tom Brands expressed his admiration for his team, saying, "These guys are taking anything that's thrown at them. They know it is an important time of the year, getting closer and closer to the postseason, and they keep getting better. They get tougher when it is a tough situation, that is what we love about them and that is what they love about the sport."
The dual began at 125 pounds, where fifth-ranked Drake Ayala claimed a 7-3 decision victory over seventh-ranked Caleb Smith. Ayala's two takedowns and solid defensive performance secured an early win for the Hawkeyes. Notably, Ayala has now accumulated six ranked wins throughout the season and continues to make a name for himself in the wrestling world.
Brody Teske, ranked seventh in his weight class, put up a valiant fight but ultimately fell to thirtieth-ranked Jacob Van Dee at 133 pounds, losing by a score of 10-4. The dual remained tied at 3-3 going into the 141-pound match, where top-ranked Real Woods showcased his skills with an 8-2 decision win over seventh-ranked Brock Hardy. Woods, known for his exceptional takedown abilities, secured two takedowns along with an escape and riding time, giving the Hawkeyes the lead once again.
At 149 pounds, twelfth-ranked Caleb Rathjen battled hard but ultimately lost via a 6-0 decision to top-ranked Ridge Lovett. However, second-ranked Jared Franek quickly shifted the momentum back in favor of Iowa with a narrow 5-4 decision victory over third-ranked Peyton Robb at 157 pounds. Franek expressed his satisfaction with the win, acknowledging that there are still areas for improvement in his game.
The second half of the night saw the Hawkeyes dominate, winning four out of the five matches. Seventh-ranked Michael Caliendo secured an 8-3 decision win over nineteenth-ranked Antrell Taylor at 165 pounds, thanks to his two takedowns, one escape, and riding time. Patrick Kennedy continued Iowa's winning streak at 174 pounds, defeating thirtieth-ranked Bubba Wilson with a 9-5 decision. Kennedy's late escape and takedown in the third period sealed the victory.
Though Nebraska earned a major decision win at 184 pounds, with third-ranked Lenny Pinto defeating Aiden Riggins by a score of 18-5, Iowa quickly bounced back. Sixteenth-ranked Zach Glazier pulled off an upset victory over eleventh-ranked Sillas Allred at 197 pounds, winning by a commanding 11-2 major decision. Glazier's outstanding performance gave the Hawkeyes a comfortable 19-10 lead going into the final bout of the night.
Heavyweight wrestler Bradley Hill sealed the deal for Iowa, securing a 4-1 decision victory over his opponent, Nash Hutchmacher. With this win, the Hawkeyes extended their all-time winning lead over Nebraska to 36-10.
Zach Glazier's undefeated record now stands at an impressive 14-0, further solidifying his reputation as a formidable wrestler. Overall, the Hawkeyes recorded an impressive 13 takedowns and 18 escapes, surpassing Nebraska's 11 takedowns and 16 escapes.
