According to sources, the much-anticipated clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship is set to take place in February in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The news was reported by ESPN.com.
Originally planned for December 23rd, the Fury-Usyk showdown was delayed after Fury's challenging bout with former UFC champion Francis Ngannou on Saturday in Riyadh. Despite emerging victorious in a split-decision win, Fury faced difficulties in the ring, sustaining cuts over his forehead and left eye. In a surprise turn, he was also knocked down in the third round, marking the seventh knockdown in his illustrious career.
Prior to his clash with Ngannou, Fury and Usyk had both signed contracts for their long-awaited battle for heavyweight supremacy. Usyk, the Olympic gold medalist and former undisputed cruiserweight champion, eagerly confronted Fury in the ring following the former's victory over Ngannou, setting the stage for their upcoming showdown.
Usyk, 36, currently holds the WBA, WBO, and IBF titles, which he won from Anthony Joshua in 2021. He successfully defended these titles in a rematch against Joshua in the previous summer, solidifying his dominance in the division. Despite earlier plans for a fight in April at London's Wembley Stadium falling through, Fury and Usyk are now gearing up for an intense clash that will undoubtedly captivate the boxing world.
The delay in the Fury-Usyk fight means that Usyk will have to go another year with only one fight, breaking his streak of multiple fights in a single year which he last achieved in 2018. The Ukrainian boxer's last fight was in August, where he secured a ninth-round knockout victory over Daniel Dubois in Poland. Usyk currently holds the No. 2 spot in ESPN's heavyweight rankings and is ranked No. 3 pound-for-pound.
Meanwhile, 35-year-old Tyson Fury, the current WBC heavyweight champion, holds the top position in the heavyweight rankings and is ranked No. 6 pound-for-pound. Fury's journey to this title reign has been remarkable, as he initially secured three heavyweight titles in an upset victory against Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. However, he took a hiatus from boxing for two-and-a-half years due to struggles with depression and substance abuse, resulting in him relinquishing the titles.
Fury returned to the ring and established himself as one of boxing's top stars with a thrilling trilogy against Deontay Wilder. After a draw in their first meeting, Fury triumphed in their subsequent two fights, with their third encounter being named ESPN's 2021 Fight of the Year and KO of the Year.
The Fury-Usyk deal includes a two-way rematch clause, indicating that fans could be treated to two consecutive fights between these heavyweight giants. With significant financial rewards at stake, this highly anticipated clash is set to captivate audiences around the world.
As the Saudi Arabian capital prepares to host this heavyweight extravaganza, boxing enthusiasts eagerly await the Fury-Usyk collision, which promises to be an epic battle for the ages.
