Former Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo was arrested over the weekend in Jackson County, Indiana, on several charges, including possession of a firearm and marijuana. Rondo, who played nine seasons with the Celtics, was pulled over on Sunday afternoon by the Indiana State Police for a traffic violation on Interstate 65.
During the traffic stop, the trooper reportedly detected the odor of marijuana emanating from Rondo's vehicle. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a firearm, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. However, Rondo is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to an existing protection order against him.
Following his arrest, Rondo was booked into the Jackson County Jail but was later released after paying bond. No court date has been set for his appearance in the Jackson County Superior Court.
This is not the first time Rondo has faced legal troubles. In 2022, a woman from Louisville sought an emergency protective order against Rondo, alleging that he had threatened her life. However, the order was dismissed a year later after Rondo completed anger management classes, counseling, and a mental health evaluation. The same woman filed another emergency protective order last March, which concluded with an agreed order five months later.
During the incident, Rondo had a child in the car with him. The child was released to the custody of a family member.
Rondo, a two-time NBA champion, had a successful tenure with the Celtics, helping them capture the NBA title in 2008. He later won a second ring in 2020 as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Throughout his 16-season NBA career, Rondo was known for his playmaking abilities and defensive prowess. Aside from the Celtics and Lakers, he also played for the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and Cleveland Cavaliers. Rondo's last NBA season was in 2021-22 with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
It remains to be seen how these recent legal issues will impact Rondo's future both on and off the court.
