Florida State running back Trey Benson and senior defensive tackle Fabien Lovett have announced that they will not be participating in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Benson and Lovett have made the decision to forgo the bowl game in order to focus on their preparations for the upcoming NFL draft.
Benson, who is ranked as the No. 2 running back by ESPN NFL draft insider Mel Kiper Jr., had an impressive season for Florida State. He rushed for 905 yards and 14 touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Benson's contributions to the team were recognized in rivalry games, where he scored a total of 10 touchdowns against Miami and Florida, including three in the November 2023 victory at The Swamp.
In an announcement posted to an undisclosed platform, Benson expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had at Florida State. "I cannot begin to express how valuable my two years here have been, especially the relationships I've made with teammates, coaches, athletic training, academic staff and the whole FSU family," he stated. Benson underwent major knee surgery in 2020 and made an impressive comeback, showcasing his talents on the field once again.
Lovett, a key reserve for the Seminoles, had a successful career at Florida State after transferring from Mississippi State. He recorded 93 tackles and six sacks throughout his time with the team, including 22 tackles and four tackles for loss in the 2023 season. Lovett, like Benson, has chosen to prioritize his NFL draft preparations over participating in the Orange Bowl.
Florida State, led by head coach Mike Norvell, will now face Georgia in the Orange Bowl on December 30th. The Seminoles will have to overcome the absence of Benson and Lovett as they take on a formidable opponent. Nevertheless, the team remains focused on putting up a strong fight and ending their season on a high note.
The decision made by Benson and Lovett reflects the personal aspirations and dedication they have towards pursuing a professional football career. As they bid farewell to their time at Florida State, both players will undoubtedly carry the memories and experiences they gained with them wherever their NFL journey takes them.
