The National Football League (NFL) has made the decision to ban Dom DiSandro, the Eagles security chief, from the sidelines for the remainder of the regular season after his ejection from a game earlier this month. Two anonymous sources familiar with the league's decision confirmed this to The Associated Press on Saturday.
DiSandro, who can still travel with the team, will not be permitted on the sideline during games, except for the upcoming playoffs. This decision comes after an incident in a game against the San Francisco 49ers on December 3. DiSandro was involved in a scuffle with 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw after he pulled him off Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
The altercation occurred in the third quarter of Philadelphia's 42-19 loss to San Francisco. Greenlaw, who was penalized for unnecessary roughness, retaliated by reaching over officials and putting his hand in DiSandro's face. As a result, Greenlaw was ejected from the game and fined $10,927 by the league for the unnecessary roughness penalty.
The NFL sent a memo to all teams last week, reminding them of the policy stating that non-player personnel are prohibited from physical contact, taunting, or directing insults towards opposing players or officials. The memo emphasized that only game officials or coaches should attempt to break up altercations. The league warned that violations of this policy could lead to fines or suspensions.
Following the incident, DiSandro met with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, which led to his banishment from the sideline. In the Eagles' game against the Dallas Cowboys last Sunday night, DiSandro watched from the tunnel due to the league's decision.
Dom DiSandro has been with the Eagles organization since 1999 and holds the position of senior adviser to general manager Howie Roseman. Apart from overseeing safety and security matters for players, coaches, and executives, DiSandro also manages security at the team's training complex and is responsible for implementing security measures related to team travel and logistics. He is also instrumental in educating the team on the NFL's personal conduct policy.
While DiSandro faces this temporary restriction, the Eagles are set to face the Seattle Seahawks in a Monday night game. It remains to be seen how this sideline absence will impact the team, but DiSandro will still be able to fulfill his other work duties.
