In a series of unfortunate events for the Detroit Lions, rookie running back Mohamed Ibrahim endured yet another devastating injury during a kickoff return in the second half of the game. Meanwhile, wide receiver Kalif Raymond managed to escape serious harm after experiencing cramps late in the match.
Ibrahim, who was recently signed to the practice squad, caught a kickoff midway through the third quarter but was dealt a powerful blow to the midsection during the return. As a result, he had to be carted off the field. Confirming the severity of the injury, Lions' coach Dan Campbell addressed the press after the game, revealing that Ibrahim had been rushed to a local hospital for immediate surgery on a dislocated hip.
"Mo's in the hospital and he's having surgery right now," Campbell expressed during his postgame press conference. "Sounds like he'll be okay, but he's going to stay here overnight. He's tough. I hate that for him."
Unfortunately, injuries have plagued Ibrahim throughout his football career. In 2021, he suffered a gruesome Achilles injury during the opening game of the Minnesota Gophers' season. Later, during Lions' training camp this year, he faced another injury that ultimately led to his placement on the injured reserve list. Eventually, Ibrahim reached an injury settlement with the team.
The Lions' running back corps is facing a challenging season filled with injuries. Zonovan Knight is already sidelined for the year with a shoulder injury, while David Montgomery is expected to miss more time due to a rib injury. Jahmyr Gibbs recently returned to play after a few games on the sidelines due to a hamstring issue. Additionally, Craig Reynolds battled through a hamstring injury during Sunday's game.
On a positive note, wide receiver Kalif Raymond, who left the game late after limping following a punt return, received better news. Coach Campbell provided reassurance that Raymond was only dealing with cramps and would be fine.
Looking ahead, the Detroit Lions will have an extra day to regroup and prepare for their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Raiders on "Monday Night Football" in Detroit.
