Five players from the team have been named to the Pro Bowl, while seven others have been named alternates for the prestigious game. Adding to their accolades, five Lions players have now earned Associated Press (AP) All-Pro honors.
Leading the way is tackle Penei Sewell, who, in just his third season, has established himself as one of the league's most dominant tackles. The 23-year-old standout has showcased his exceptional skills in run-blocking and pass protection. Sewell has allowed only one sack and 14 hurries throughout the season while playing at both left and right tackle positions.
Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has also received recognition for his outstanding contributions to the team. Although he was initially named as a first alternate for the Pro Bowl, St. Brown has now earned his place on the AP All-Pro first team. The 24-year-old has had a remarkable season, leading the NFL in 100-yard receiving games and ranking high in receptions, receiving yards, touchdowns, and first-down catches. St. Brown also holds the distinction of being third in NFL history for receptions through a player's first three seasons.
Another Lions player, center Frank Ragnow, has demonstrated his skill and consistency by securing his third Pro Bowl selection and second AP All-Pro nod. Ragnow, at 27 years old, has solidified his position as the anchor of one of the league's best offensive lines. His exemplary play has contributed to the Lions' impressive offensive production, achieving both 4,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing yards for the second consecutive season. Ragnow has allowed just one sack in the entire season and is regarded as the top center by Pro Football Focus.
For rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, the 2023 season has been nothing short of extraordinary. The 22-year-old has shattered records, surpassing the most receptions by a rookie tight end in NFL history. With 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns, LaPorta has secured his place among the league's elite tight ends. His exceptional performance has earned him both Pro Bowl and All-Pro recognition in his debut season.
Lastly, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, a veteran special teamer, has been honored for his significant contributions in the field. The 28-year-old receiver has excelled in special teams play, leading the league in special teams tackles. Reeves-Maybin's agility and strategic execution have also played a vital role in successful fake punt conversions, showcasing his versatility and game-changing abilities.
The Detroit Lions' impressive collective performance and individual achievements highlight their growth and potential as a formidable team in the NFL. With multiple players earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods, the Lions have demonstrated their commitment to excellence and set a promising course for the seasons to come.
