In an effort to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Detroit Lions have announced several roster moves on Friday. Among them is the release of veteran fullback Jason Cabinda, who has been with the team for five seasons.

Cabinda, who joined the Lions in 2019, was waived to create space for kicker Michael Badgley, who was signed from the practice squad. Badgley's addition to the active roster comes after he replaced Riley Patterson as the team's starting kicker in the recent game against the Denver Broncos.

In his two games as the Lions' kicker, Badgley has showcased his accuracy, going 9-for-10 on extra points, with his only field goal attempt resulting in a successful 37-yard kick against the Minnesota Vikings. His solid performance led to the decision to sign him to the active roster permanently.

The Lions also made other roster moves, releasing defensive lineman Chris Smith from the practice squad and re-signing offensive lineman Michael Schofield to the practice squad. Schofield had been dropped from the practice squad eight days ago to make room for cornerback Craig James.

The decision to waive Cabinda came despite his recent return from injury. Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who filled in admirably at fullback during Cabinda's absence, ultimately proved his ability to handle the position. As a result, the Lions opted to part ways with Cabinda.

During his tenure with the Lions, Cabinda amassed a total of six carries for 27 yards, along with seven receptions for 29 yards and a touchdown.

Looking ahead, the Lions may soon face the challenge of making two more roster spots if safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and edge rusher James Houston return from injured reserve. Both players are currently in their 21-day practice windows, suggesting that their return to the active roster may be imminent.
