The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a significant move by firing their general manager, Jarmo Kekalainen, according to an announcement made on Thursday. Kekalainen, who had been with the franchise since 2013, has been relieved of his duties due to the team's underwhelming performance. President of hockey operations John Davidson and the hockey operations management team will take on interim GM responsibilities.

Kekalainen, who held the position of general manager for nearly a decade, guided the Blue Jackets through 869 games. During his tenure, the team achieved a record of 410-362-97, making him the longest-serving general manager in franchise history. However, despite having talented young players and prospects, the team's overall results have not met expectations.

During a news conference, Davidson expressed his admiration for Kekalainen, calling him a "smart and talented manager" and a personal friend. However, he acknowledged that a new voice was needed to guide the team moving forward.

Davidson also emphasized that the search for a new general manager would be conducted outside the organization, indicating that fresh perspectives and ideas are sought to lead the team. No specific timetable has been set for the hiring process.

In the meantime, Davidson, alongside team president Mike Priest and ownership, will be responsible for making decisions related to hockey operations. This includes managing ongoing scouting efforts as well as navigating the upcoming trade deadline, which is now just 22 days away. Davidson assured that he had been kept in the loop regarding Kekalainen's discussions with other teams regarding potential trades.

The timing of Kekalainen's dismissal, just after the NHL's All-Star break, may appear unusual. Davidson explained that his recent back surgery prevented him from being physically present, thus necessitating the decision-making process to proceed without him.

In a statement, Blue Jackets' majority owner and governor John P. McConnell expressed gratitude to Kekalainen on behalf of the ownership group. The team now looks ahead to a new era under new leadership, hoping for improved results in the future.
