The Colorado Rapids have made a significant move in their quest for success by announcing Chris Armas as their new head coach, sources confirmed on Thursday. Armas, a former MLS head coach, brings with him a wealth of experience and a decorated playing career.
The Rapids, who finished at the bottom of the Western Conference this season, made the decision to part ways with former coach Robin Fraser in September. After an extensive interview process, a deal was reached between Armas and Colorado.
Among the finalists considered for the position were Rapids interim head coach Chris Little, who is expected to remain on Armas' staff, and Charlotte FC assistant Pa-Modou Kah. The Rapids also reportedly spoke to former Arsenal player Jack Wilshere earlier in the process.
Armas has previously served as an MLS head coach, most recently with Toronto FC in 2021. However, his tenure with Toronto FC was short-lived, as he was let go after just 11 league matches. Prior to that, Armas had a successful stint with the New York Red Bulls, winning a Supporters' Shield in 2018. He took over the team during the season after Jesse Marsch left for RB Leipzig and achieved a record of 33-27-11 with the Red Bulls.
Following his time in MLS, Armas took on assistant coaching roles at Manchester United under Ralf Rangnick during the 2021-22 Premier League season, and briefly at Leeds United under Marsch in 2023.
Armas's playing career was equally impressive, being named to the MLS Best XI five times while playing for the Chicago Fire. He also won the MLS Cup and four U.S. Open Cups during his time with the team. Additionally, Armas represented the U.S. men's national team, earning 66 appearances between 1998 and 2005.
As the Rapids look to rebuild and reshape their squad, they have already begun making player personnel decisions this offseason. Jack Price and Diego Rubio have both announced they will not be returning to the club in 2024, providing the team with increased flexibility under the salary cap.
Furthermore, the Rapids currently have forward Rafael Navarro on loan from Brazilian club Palmeiras, and a decision regarding a potential purchase option will need to be made. Navarro, along with midfielder Connor Ronan, fullbacks Andrew Gutman and Keegan Rosenberry, and rising midfielder Cole Bassett, are expected to play key roles for the team in the interim.
With the hiring of Chris Armas, the Colorado Rapids hope to turn their fortunes around and climb up the Western Conference standings in the upcoming season. The experienced coach's leadership and expertise will be crucial as the team aims for a successful campaign.
