College football ratings continue to dominate the television landscape as two more games surpassed the eight million viewer mark last Saturday. The matchup between Penn State and Ohio State on FOX's "Big Noon Saturday" garnered an impressive 5.3 rating and attracted a staggering 9.96 million viewers. This game now stands as the third-largest audience of the season across all networks.
Notably, Ohio State has been involved in two of the top three games this season. Alongside their victory over Notre Dame on NBC in September, which drew 9.98 million viewers (10.59 million including Adobe Analytics), and the Colorado-Oregon game on ABC the same day with 10.03 million viewers, Saturday's game solidified Ohio State's dominance in attracting large audiences.
The Buckeyes' triumph against Penn State peaked with an incredible 11.50 million viewers, setting a new record for the largest college football audience of the season on FOX. Impressively, this game also ranks as the network's seventh-largest audience overall (excluding conference championship and bowl games). It trails only five Ohio State-Michigan matchups and last year's Alabama-Texas game, which drew a massive 10.60 million viewers.
This season, already five games have averaged at least nine million viewers, surpassing last year's regular season total of four. The ratings for the Penn State-Ohio State game experienced an 18% increase, while viewership surged by 20% compared to the same matchup last year. Additionally, Iowa-Ohio State on a comparable weekend last year saw ratings more than double and viewership more than triple.
In another high-profile game on Saturday, the clash between Tennessee and Alabama on the SEC on CBS network captured the attention of viewers, averaging a 4.2 rating and 8.01 million viewers. This game marked the largest audience for the network this season and the eighth-largest viewership across all networks. The Tide's victory reached its peak with 9.79 million viewers and became the 13th game this season to maintain an average of at least seven million viewers, outpacing last year's regular season total of ten.
While ratings and viewership for the Tennessee-Alabama game declined compared to their meeting last year, where Tennessee achieved a monumental upset victory with 11.56 million viewers, the current game still showcased an impressive 87% ratings jump and 108% increase in viewership compared to a similar week last season featuring Mississippi-LSU.
Also, noteworthy during the weekend was FSU's remarkable comeback win over Duke, which achieved a 2.2 rating and attracted 4.08 million viewers on ABC's Saturday Night Football. This game exceeded in viewership the competitive primetime window that included the fourth and fifth-most watched games of the weekend: Michigan-Michigan State on NBC with a 1.8 rating and 3.73 million viewers, and Utah-USC on FOX with a 1.7 rating and 3.23 million viewers.
Even The CW, known for airing different content, experienced stronger-than-usual primetime viewership on Saturday night, attaining a season-high 0.44 rating and 788,000 viewers for Virginia's shocking upset of the previously-undefeated North Carolina.
Despite increased competition from other networks this year, ABC managed to post increases of 8% and 15% in ratings and viewership, respectively, over last year's Minnesota-Penn State game. However, the network's early windows did not fare as well, with the Washington State-Oregon game experiencing a significant decline of 45% in ratings and 47% in viewership compared to the Texas-Oklahoma State matchup last year. Similarly, UCF-Oklahoma saw a decline of 53% in ratings and 54% in viewership compared to the Syracuse-Clemson game.
In other notable results from the weekend, the Texas-Houston game on FOX achieved a 1.6 rating and attracted 3.08 million viewers, slightly down from the UCLA-Oregon game last year. Furthermore, Minnesota's upset of Iowa on NBC garnered a 0.9 rating and 1.68 million viewers, becoming the network's second-largest afternoon audience this season.
College football ratings continue to defy expectations this season, capturing the attention of millions of viewers and setting new records. As the season progresses, it will be exciting to see how these impressive numbers evolve and if they continue to exceed expectations.
