A disappointing loss against Arizona State has left the UCLA Bruins and their head coach, Chip Kelly, with unanswered questions about their future in the Big Ten. The Bruins, who were already dealing with a string of injuries, were forced to play fourth-string quarterback Chase Griffin, resulting in a lackluster performance on the field. UCLA's 17-7 defeat has sparked concerns about Kelly's coaching abilities and offensive strategy.

The game at the Rose Bowl started with enthusiasm from fans, but as time ticked away in the final minute, a sense of indifference settled over the stadium. The boos that had accompanied the Bruins' halftime departure transformed into chants of "A-S-U!" from opposing fans, highlighting the disappointment felt by the home crowd. A lone UCLA fan behind the team's bench raised doubts about Kelly's longevity and suitability as the coach to lead the Bruins in the Big Ten.

This loss, which marked the most crushing defeat of Kelly's six seasons, raised eyebrows not just because of the opponent, but also due to UCLA's own significant issues. The Bruins now face a second consecutive loss and a renewed skepticism about Kelly's ability to deliver victories in the Big Ten conference. The fact that UCLA couldn't overcome a Pac-12 opponent that was severely understaffed, employing a running back and converted tight end as their quarterbacks, adds to the concern.

Critics have also started to question Kelly's reputation as an offensive guru. With Collin Schlee, a backup, starting as quarterback for the first time this season, the Bruins heavily relied on their running game, accumulating 183 yards on the ground. However, their inability to convert on fourth down, going 0 for 4 and failing to gain ground in crucial red zone situations, raises doubts about Kelly's play-calling and predictability.

Kelly himself admitted to the limitations of his team's performance, acknowledging the need for self-reflection and improvement. Failing to score after having first-and-goal at the Arizona State five-yard line and a first down at the Sun Devils' 18 reflects a lack of creativity and imagination on the offensive end.

On the other side of the field, Arizona State effectively filled the gaps left by their injured players with their creative strategies. Utilizing the swinging gate play, which bunched most of their offensive linemen on one side of the field, the Sun Devils managed to produce 250 yards of offense, a stark difference from their previous game where they only managed 83 yards. Running back Cam Skattebo even threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Elijhah Badger, further highlighting UCLA's defensive vulnerabilities.

As UCLA finds itself in a precarious situation, Arizona State's victory exemplifies the importance of adaptability and resourcefulness in overcoming adversity. The Bruins' inability to maintain discipline on crucial downs, as evidenced by penalties on third down that extended the Sun Devils' drives, ultimately sealed their fate.

With UCLA's record now standing at 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-12, the pressure mounts on Chip Kelly and his coaching staff. If they fail to secure victories in upcoming matchups against USC, California, and a bowl opponent, Kelly may face a challenging reckoning. His supporters can no longer point to a consistent upward trajectory, as the Bruins now struggle to surpass last season's 9-4 record. With a current overall record at UCLA of 33-33, the future hangs in the balance for Chip Kelly and the fate of the Bruins' football program.
