Chip Kelly, the former head coach of the UCLA Bruins, is set to make a move to Ohio State University where he will join the Buckeyes as their offensive coordinator. Kelly, who had a challenging tenure at UCLA, looks to reunite with his protege, Ryan Day, as Ohio State seeks to regain dominance in the Big Ten conference.

During his six seasons at UCLA, Kelly achieved a record of 35-34. Although he experienced success as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks, Kelly faced difficulties in turning around the UCLA program. However, in the 2022 season, he led the Bruins to a 9-4 record, finishing off the year ranked No. 21. Last season, the team won eight games and notably defeated their arch-rival, USC.

Despite these achievements, Kelly faced challenges on the recruiting front in the era of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). These difficulties seemed to strain his relationship with the program, prompting one Bruins staffer to describe it as a "pretty bad marriage."

The departure of Kelly has been met with frustration by fans and boosters alike. Now, the question arises as to whether the boosters will become more engaged under a new coach. Athletic director Martin Jarmond has assured the team that a new coach will be appointed within 96 hours, indicating a swift hiring process. Kelly's push for two-year deals for his assistant coaches may require the new coach to retain a significant portion of the staff.

As the search for a new coach begins, former Stanford coach David Shaw emerges as a potential candidate. With his familiarity with the high academic environment at UCLA and a respected coaching career that includes four Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, Shaw's reputation precedes him. Despite recent struggles at Stanford, Shaw enjoyed five seasons with at least 10 wins.

Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck also stands out as a high-energy candidate with a strong understanding of the Big Ten. In 2019, he was named Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Golden Gophers to an impressive 11-2 season. Though his record in conference play is not as strong, Fleck's enthusiasm and motivational approach may prove valuable in revitalizing UCLA football.

Among the potential candidates without head coaching experience, former UCLA running backs coach DeShaun Foster garners attention. Foster recently accepted a position as the running backs coach for the Las Vegas Raiders and is admired by both players and program insiders. Known for his skill in developing playmakers, Foster's contributions to the UCLA running game make him a viable contender for the head coaching role.

Another beloved coach within the program is UCLA defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe. Known for his outstanding performance with the Bruins and strong recruiting ties on the West Coast and in Hawaii, Malloe brings a well-rounded skill set to the table. Furthermore, Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford, revered by both players and peers, remains a possible candidate due to his past experience working with athletic director Martin Jarmond.

Finally, Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White, a former UCLA player, showcases his defensive prowess and transformative abilities within the Big Ten. White's impact on the Huskers' defense, improving their run defense and sacks rankings, suggests his potential as a bright and strategic defensive-minded coach.

As the coaching search continues, USC defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn emerges as a wildcard candidate. Despite his recent move across town to rival USC, Lynn's impressive debut season with the Bruins, leading them to the No. 1 defense in the Pac-12, has caught the attention of many within the program. With a standout performance in yards per play allowed and scoring defense, Lynn presents a young, yet mature option for the head coaching role.

Chip Kelly's expected departure from UCLA to join Ohio State as the offensive coordinator marks a new chapter for both coaches and programs. As the Bruins embark on their search for a new head coach, the potential candidates mentioned offer different strengths and experiences that could re-energize UCLA football. Time will tell who will take the reins and guide the Bruins towards success in the future.
