In a surprising move, the NFL has exercised its flex option for the first time in the history of "Monday Night Football," replacing the Week 15 matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots. The highly anticipated game will be replaced by a clash between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Seattle Seahawks, scheduled to take place on December 17 at 8:15 p.m. ET.
The decision to flex out the Chiefs-Patriots game reflects the sharp decline of the Patriots, who were once known for their prowess in prime-time matchups. With a record of 2-9 this season, they no longer attract the same level of interest. Consequently, their game against the Chiefs, originally slated for a primetime spot, will now be played on Sunday, December 17 at 1 p.m. ET, and will be broadcasted by Fox.
On the other hand, the flexed game highlights the impressive rise of the Philadelphia Eagles, led by their star quarterback Jalen Hurts. With a record of 10-1, the Eagles have cemented their status as one of the top teams in the NFL. This game will mark their sixth appearance in a prime-time slot, following their Sunday night face-off against the Dallas Cowboys.
For the Seattle Seahawks, this will be their fourth prime-time game of the season, and their third in the span of four weeks. The matchup against the Eagles will feature a showcase of two standout rookies, Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter and Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon. Both players are among the frontrunners for the coveted Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
This season marks the first time that the NFL has introduced the option to flex games in and out of "Monday Night Football" between Weeks 12 and 17. The deadline for making a decision on Monday night games is 12 days prior to kickoff, allowing the league some flexibility to showcase more compelling matchups.
In addition to the flex announcement, the NFL has also officially confirmed a tripleheader lineup for Saturday, December 16. The Minnesota Vikings will face the Cincinnati Bengals at 1 p.m. ET, followed by a matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts at 4:30 p.m. ET. The day will conclude with a game between the Denver Broncos and the Detroit Lions, scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET. Each of these games will be broadcasted on the NFL Network.
Fans across the league are eagerly anticipating these changes, as the NFL continues to provide thrilling matchups and accommodate flexibility in its scheduling.
