CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks announced on Saturday that veteran forward Corey Perry will be away from the team "for the foreseeable future" due to personal matters, according to General Manager Kyle Davidson.
Perry, 38, has not played in the past two games and did not participate in team practice throughout the week. While Davidson declined to provide specific details regarding Perry's absence, he did not rule out the possibility of a potential trade.
In a statement released by Perry's agent, Pat Morris, it was emphasized that Perry and his family are seeking privacy during this time.
Coach Luke Richardson confirmed that Perry's absence from the lineup during their recent 7-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets was due to an "organizational decision." Perry did not take part in Thursday's practice and was also scratched from Friday's overtime win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Perry, who was acquired by the Blackhawks from the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier this year, has tallied nine points in 16 games this season. His absence will undoubtedly leave a void in the team's roster.
Teammate Nick Foligno expressed the importance of Perry's presence within the team, stating, "He's a big part of what we're doing here...he's well loved and we'll miss him."
The Blackhawks, who currently hold a record of 6-12-0, will face off against the St. Louis Blues at United Center on Sunday. As of now, it is uncertain whether the team will look to acquire another player to fill Perry's role on the roster. General Manager Davidson noted that adding talent mid-season is a challenging task, and it is not currently a priority for the team.
Perry, a former Stanley Cup champion with the Anaheim Ducks, has had an illustrious career with 892 points in 1,273 games played. Known for his leadership and experience, Perry's absence will undoubtedly be felt within the Blackhawks' locker room.
As the situation unfolds, the team will rely on their collective leadership group to navigate through Perry's absence. The young team has shown significant growth so far this season, which provides optimism for the future, according to General Manager Davidson.
The Blackhawks organization wishes Perry the best during this challenging time, and his return to the team will be eagerly awaited by fans and teammates alike.
