The Chicago Blackhawks have made the decision to sever ties with veteran winger Corey Perry after he was found to have engaged in unacceptable conduct. The team cited a violation of Perry's NHL Standard Player Contract and club policies aimed at promoting professional and safe work environments. The Blackhawks have placed Perry on unconditional waivers with the intention of terminating his contract, pending his clearance on Wednesday.
Although the team has not revealed the specific details surrounding Perry's actions, General Manager Kyle Davidson made it clear that the incident does not involve any players or their families. In his statement, Davidson stated that claims suggesting otherwise were inaccurate and reprehensible.
Perry's agent, Pat Morris, has not provided any comment on the situation. Previously, Morris had stated that Perry had taken a leave of absence to attend to personal matters.
This development comes amidst ongoing discussions about the organizational culture within the Chicago Blackhawks. Following a scathing report in October 2021, which exposed the mishandling of a player's sexual assault allegations from the team's 2010 Stanley Cup run, the franchise has implemented policy changes and improved reporting procedures.
Davidson hinted at the connection between the incident involving Perry and the team's ongoing efforts to address the organizational culture. When questioned about whether the new reporting processes for misconduct made a difference in this case, he responded affirmatively, suggesting that progress has been made.
Perry, who joined the Blackhawks in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning in June, was signed to a one-year, $4 million contract. The 38-year-old forward, known for his leadership, has had a successful career winning the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. He also reached the final three consecutive years with the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, and Tampa Bay Lightning from 2020-2022, becoming the first player in NHL history to suffer consecutive losses in the final with different teams.
The Blackhawks had brought in Perry, along with Taylor Hall and Nick Foligno, to provide veteran support to their promising young player, Connor Bedard. However, Perry's departure from the organization comes after playing just 16 games, while Hall has been ruled out for the season due to a torn ACL in his right knee.
In their efforts to bolster their lineup, the Blackhawks made a trade on Tuesday night. They acquired forward Anthony Beauvillier from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 draft. The 26-year-old Beauvillier, a first-round selection in the 2015 draft, has recorded two goals and six assists in 22 games this season.
The Blackhawks have stated that they have been in contact with the NHL and the NHL Players' Association regarding the situation. Davidson confirmed that both parties were informed, emphasizing that this incident was a team matter.
As the Blackhawks move forward from this controversy, they will continue their pursuit of a positive and inclusive organizational culture while striving for success on the ice.
