Charles Oliveira, the former UFC champion, has had his scheduled fight against Islam Makhachev for the UFC lightweight championship canceled due to a severe cut above his right eye. Despite the setback, Oliveira remains optimistic about his future in the UFC and is counting on being next in line for the belt in 2024. Alternatively, he is open to the idea of facing Conor McGregor in a highly lucrative MMA bout.

During a recent interview with MMA Fighting, Oliveira shared that he sustained the deep gash during a sparring session at Chute Boxe, where he slipped while defending a takedown and clashed heads with his training partner. Disappointed by the cancellation, Oliveira expressed his belief in fate and stated that he is confident that something greater awaits him.

Although the stitches from his cut were removed on Wednesday, Oliveira is still not cleared to resume training with impact. The doctor's recommendation included a period of 10 to 15 days away from training to allow the cut to heal fully. Additionally, Oliveira underwent an MRI to check for any potential complications such as a blood clot in his head.

The setback has temporarily shifted Oliveira's focus from his dreams of becoming champion, but he emphasized that mistakes cannot be made at this stage of his career. While money is not his primary motivation, he acknowledged that the financial aspect of a fight is essential. Nevertheless, Oliveira highlighted that his focus is on leaving behind a legacy for future generations to admire.

Negotiations regarding Oliveira's next move will be handled by his managers, Diego Lima and Jorge Patino, who will communicate with the UFC. Oliveira has two ideas in mind for his next fight: a title shot or a highly anticipated bout against Conor McGregor. Oliveira expressed his eagerness to finally face McGregor, emphasizing that it is a fight he has been requesting for a long time. Highlighting the potential financial success of such a matchup, Oliveira believes that both he and McGregor are significant draws for the UFC.

Nevertheless, Oliveira made it clear that he is the rightful number one contender and has defeated every other fighter ranked below him. While he is prepared to accept any opponent chosen by the UFC, Oliveira is awaiting confirmation for a title shot. He expressed his confidence in his abilities and his deservingness of the opportunity to fight for the UFC lightweight championship.

In response to comments made by Islam Makhachev's manager, Ali Abdelaziz, who claimed that Oliveira had missed his shot and that Justin Gaethje should be the next in line for the title, Oliveira dismissed the criticism. Oliveira suggested that Abdelaziz may have ulterior motives, as he manages both Makhachev and Gaethje. Oliveira firmly believes he is the rightful number one contender and is patiently awaiting his opportunity to prove it inside the Octagon.

Regarding the upcoming rematch between champions Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega, Oliveira expects another closely contested fight. He acknowledged the significance of the opportunity for Volkanovski to become a two-division champion and expects a strategic battle between the two fighters.

As Oliveira continues his recovery and waits to see what the future holds, his determination to become champion remains unwavering. Whether it is a shot at the title or a lucrative bout with Conor McGregor, Oliveira is ready to seize his moment and leave his mark on the sport of MMA.
