Cam McCormick, the longest-tenured player in Oregon football history, is set to etch his name in college football history as he prepares for an unprecedented ninth season on the field. McCormick, who transferred to Miami last year, announced his return on Thursday, marking a remarkable feat in his collegiate career.

Despite facing numerous challenges, including injuries that plagued him from 2018 to 2021, McCormick expressed his love for his teammates, coaches, and the University of Miami, stating his desire to finish what they started together. The bond shared among the team was described as everlasting and worth the struggles they encountered.

During his previous season with the Hurricanes, McCormick primarily featured as a blocking tight end, accumulating eight catches for 62 yards across 13 games. In his first injury-free season since his redshirt-freshman year, back at Oregon in 2022, he managed to showcase his skills with 10 catches for 66 yards and three touchdowns. These impressive performances earned him the Orange Bowl-FWAA Courage Award.

McCormick's journey has been filled with obstacles right from the beginning. After redshirting his true freshman year in 2016 and recovering from a torn left ACL sustained during his senior year of high school, he, along with two other Oregon players, suffered from rhabdomyolysis due to strenuous workouts in January 2017. Despite the hardships, McCormick chose not to join the lawsuit against the university. In 2017, he contributed with six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown, as well as three tackles. Unfortunately, his playing time was significantly limited from 2018 to 2021 due to a broken left ankle sustained during the 2018 season opener against Bowling Green, which required three surgeries. He further endured a torn right Achilles against Ohio State in 2021.

The NCAA granted McCormick an additional two years of eligibility prior to the 2020 season, allowing him to return to the field after missing the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, he was afforded another year of eligibility in light of his 2021 injury. Over the course of his career, McCormick has accumulated 26 catches for 231 yards and four touchdowns, alongside four tackles, across 36 games.

Notably, McCormick has overcome an auditory processing disorder and attained both a bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Oregon. In a display of his commitment to helping others overcome unique challenges, he also announced a donation to the football team at Gallaudet, a school for the deaf, in support of fellow athletes.

Miami coach Mario Cristobal expressed his admiration for McCormick, describing him as a dedicated athlete, hard worker, and natural-born leader. Cristobal welcomed him back to the team for the upcoming season, emphasizing the positive impact he would bring.

With his decision to return for a ninth season, Cam McCormick sets himself apart as a record-breaker and an inspiration to college football players everywhere. His determination and resilience serve as a testament to his character and the values he embodies, making him an asset to the Miami football program.
