BROOKLYN, N.Y. - In a thrilling championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off, the 13th-ranked Baylor Bears showcased their offensive prowess to secure a hard-fought 95-91 victory over the Florida Gators. The undefeated Bears (6-0) impressed with their efficiency, shooting an impressive 52 percent from the field, including a remarkable 56 percent from beyond the arc.
Despite a valiant comeback by the Gators, who battled back from a double-digit deficit in the first half, Baylor's lethal offense had an answer for every run. Florida's efforts to limit three-point attempts fell short, as Baylor converted 14 of their shots from downtown.
The game-changing moment occurred when Baylor forward Jaylen Bridges penetrated the lane and found teammate Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua, who was left unguarded at the top of the key. Tchamwa Tchatchoua, not typically a scorer, made a key contribution to secure the win for the Bears.
Florida, although outscored by Baylor, put up a good fight. The Gators shot an impressive 45 percent overall but struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on just eight of their 26 attempts. They did, however, excel in other areas, out-rebounding Baylor, winning the battle on the offensive glass, and dominating in the paint.
Despite their efforts, the difference in the game was Baylor's exceptional three-point shooting. Led by forward Jalen Bridges, who sank five of his seven attempts from downtown, the Bears had six different players contribute to their success behind the arc. Crafty point guard RayJ Dennis had an outstanding performance, leading Baylor in scoring with 24 points, along with four rebounds, eight assists, and three steals.
Florida's standout performer was sophomore guard, whose career-high 25 points and nine rebounds fueled the Gators' comeback efforts. He was instrumental in limiting Baylor's leading scorer, Ja'Kobe Walker, to a season-low 11 points.
Despite their loss, the Gators displayed resilience and showcased their potential. Coach named the Bears' exceptional three-point shooting as the deciding factor in the game, emphasizing that even with their strong performance in other areas, it was difficult to overcome Baylor's offensive efficiency.
As the champions of the NIT Season Tip-Off, the Baylor Bears remain undefeated and continue to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. Their offensive firepower and ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc make them a formidable opponent for future matchups.
Both teams demonstrated their skills and determination throughout the game, providing an exciting spectacle for fans in attendance at Barclays Center. The Baylor Bears celebrate their victory while the Florida Gators regroup and prepare for their next challenge.
