In the wake of the Kansas City Chiefs' thrilling Super Bowl victory, head coach Andy Reid took the time to reflect on the team's success and discuss what lies ahead for the franchise. Reid commended star quarterback Patrick Mahomes for his unwavering passion for the game, stating that Mahomes' love for football is unmatched and will continue to drive him to greatness.
"He has a love for the game, and so when you have that type of love, especially as young as he is, I don't think that's going anywhere," said Reid. "He doesn't let all the outside events affect his play. He's one of those guys that is known worldwide, really. That really doesn't phase him."
Reid's admiration for his players was further evident in his celebration with defensive tackle Chris Jones after the win. Reid acknowledged Jones' tremendous effort and perseverance throughout the game, noting that he pushed himself beyond his limits to help secure the victory.
"Yeah. I was so happy for him," Reid expressed. "He was tired, but he sucked it up and got out there. He took himself to that state where you've got to really reach down and get through that evil thing that's kicking your butt internally. So he did that, and I was so proud of him for that."
As the Chiefs revel in their back-to-back titles, attention now turns to the offseason and potential contract negotiations. Jones, set to become an unrestricted free agent, has been a crucial part of the team's success, and Reid expressed his desire to have him back.
"Veach has said it before, we'd love to have him back," said Reid, referring to general manager Brett Veach. "They've just got to work all that out. I think the effort will be there, probably on both parts, to get something done."
In his discussion with reporters, Reid also acknowledged the talent and coaching prowess of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. Reid praised Shanahan for his exceptional job during the season, acknowledging that the Super Bowl could have easily swung in the opposite direction.
"Kyle did a heck of a job this year," Reid acknowledged. "That game could have gone either way. I'm fortunate to say we came out on the positive side, but it could have easily gone that other way."
Looking ahead, Reid outlined the team's upcoming schedule, emphasizing the need to prepare for the 2024 season. While the coaches will take a week off, they will soon dive into the scouting process for the combine and begin their preparations for the upcoming season.
"The coaches will take a little bit - right around a week off, but then we've got the combine coming up," Reid explained. "We got to get ourselves ready for that, and then it just goes from there. We're in the swing of things after that, once you get to the combine."
As the Chiefs bask in the glory of their Super Bowl triumph, their sights are already set on further success in the 2024 season. With a talented roster and a passionate leader in Reid, the future looks bright for Kansas City.
