In a comprehensive review of the rookie class of 2023, Eric Edholm and Chad Reuter take a closer look at the young players who made an impact in the AFC East. The Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins, in particular, showcased some promising talent from their draft picks.
For the Buffalo Bills, their first-round selection Dalton Kincaid exceeded expectations. Initially intended to be part of a strong two-tight end set alongside Dawson Knox, Kincaid stepped up when Knox suffered a wrist injury. The former basketball player proved his worth with an impressive stat line - 73 receptions for 673 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season. He also contributed eight catches for 104 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs. Kincaid's performance validated the Bills' decision to trade their fourth-round pick to acquire him in the first round.
O'Cyrus Torrence, the Bills' second-round pick, made an immediate impact, starting every game at right guard. He showcased strong run-blocking skills but needs to further develop his pass protection abilities to solidify his long-term role on the team. Linebacker Dorian Williams had a fluctuating role throughout the season, stepping in as an injury replacement but ultimately losing the starting job. While his future is uncertain, Williams has shown potential in the NFL.
Unfortunately, none of the Bills' Day 3 picks saw playing time in their rookie season. Justin Shorter, despite showing promise in the preseason, was hampered by a hamstring injury and could not crack the lineup upon his return from injured reserve. Broeker and Austin were claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans, with Broeker playing in three late-season games. Austin, on the other hand, was released by the Texans and found a spot with the New England Patriots.
Moving on to the Miami Dolphins' draft class, their selections brought mixed results. Due to penalties and trades, the Dolphins had limited picks in the 2023 draft. They forfeited their first-round pick and traded others for Bradley Chubb and Jalen Ramsey. Chubb signed a contract extension and has proved to be impactful for Miami, recording 13.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles. Ramsey made the Pro Bowl but was limited to 10 games due to a knee injury.
Among the Dolphins' rookies, Cam Smith's season was largely spent on special teams, while De'Von Achane emerged as the standout player. Achane displayed versatility as a running back, finishing second on the team with 800 rush yards and eight rush touchdowns. He also showcased receiving skills, tallying 27 receptions for 197 receiving yards and three scores. As long as Achane stays healthy, he is expected to be an explosive contributor to the Dolphins' offense.
The Dolphins made significant trades, sending their fourth and fifth-round picks to Kansas City and San Francisco, respectively. The acquisition of Tyreek Hill has proven to be beneficial for the Dolphins' offense, while Jeff Wilson Jr. has struggled with injuries. Unfortunately, Higgins did not make the final roster but found success as a tight end with the Arizona Cardinals.
As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, both the Bills and Dolphins have seen promising talent emerge from their rookie classes. With further development and a focus on health, these young players have the potential to make a significant impact in the AFC East and the league as a whole.
