In a surprising turn of events, the hit horror comedy series "Shining Vale" will not be returning for a third season on Starz. The announcement came shortly after the Season 2 finale, which aired on December 1. Co-creator Jeff Astrof, however, remains optimistic, having already started writing a third season and hoping that the show will find a new home.
According to sources, "Shining Vale" did not manage to gather a large enough audience to justify its continuation on the network. As a result, Starz has decided to cut ties with the show and will be removing both seasons from its streaming service by the end of the year.
Astrof took to Instagram to share the news with fans, posting a cast photo along with a heartfelt caption. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work on the series, describing his experience as an "absolute joy" without a single bad day. Astrof urged viewers to catch the limited series before it is taken down from STARZ by December 31.
Speaking exclusively to Variety, Astrof further elaborated on his feelings about the cancellation. While he acknowledged that there are more significant issues happening in the world, the news of "Shining Vale" not being picked up for a Season 3 left him crushed and deeply saddened. He revealed that he had been actively working on writing the third season until he received the news last week.
Astrof took the opportunity to thank the exceptionally talented cast, crew, and his co-creator Sharon Horgan. He also highlighted the contributions of the remarkable female writers and directors who helped shape the show's unique tone.
Despite his disappointment, Astrof remains hopeful for the series and expressed his desire for another streaming platform to pick it up. He highlighted that Season 3 had already been partially written, confirming that there are still many stories left to be told. Astrof concluded his statement by expressing his gratitude for being able to share the saga of the Phelps family over the past two seasons.
"Shining Vale," co-created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, revolves around a family that moves into a haunted house in a small town. The series boasts a talented ensemble cast, with Courteney Cox taking on the role of the unfulfilled matriarch, Pat, and Gus Birney portraying her daughter, who also begins to see hauntings in the second season. Mira Sorvino and Greg Kinnear are among the other prominent cast members.
Courteney Cox previously spoke about her attraction to the show's unique combination of comedy and horror. Cox found the concept of a "shit-com" (a term coined by Sharon Horgan) intriguing and unlike anything she had read before.
As "Shining Vale" bids farewell to Starz, fans of the series can only hope that another streaming platform will recognize its potential and provide an opportunity for the show to continue its supernatural storytelling in the near future.
