Inching closer to a potential deal that could put an end to the strike, negotiations between Hollywood actors represented by SAG-AFTRA and studios are reportedly showing signs of optimism. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's chief negotiator, revealed that talks over the weekend have been "productive." However, he cautioned that there is still work to be done before a final agreement can be reached.
The ongoing discussions have revolved around various issues, and the latest focus has shifted to artificial intelligence (AI). Crabtree-Ireland highlighted the significance of AI in these negotiations, emphasizing that crucial gaps in this area must be bridged for a deal to be possible.
While progress is being made, Crabtree-Ireland stated unequivocally that rumors suggesting an imminent agreement are unfounded. "We have real substantive issues still between us," he affirmed. The negotiator expressed that the discussions have been intense but in a productive direction overall.
Addressing the revenue sharing proposal, Crabtree-Ireland redirected the conversation, underscoring the current emphasis on AI. He stated that without resolving key AI-related concerns, a final agreement would remain out of reach.
When pressed for a timeline on a potential deal, Crabtree-Ireland admitted uncertainty, asserting that it would depend on how the companies respond to the proposals put forth by the guild. He explained, "It could be something that moves quickly, it could be something where there's really a disconnect." This unpredictability makes it challenging to determine when an agreement might be reached. However, he reconfirmed the unwavering commitment to advancing the negotiation process until a deal is secured.
In a show of solidarity, approximately 150 strikers dressed in professional attire gathered outside Netflix, where Crabtree-Ireland provided the update on the negotiations. The actors aimed to underscore their determination and seriousness in seeking a fair resolution.
With no negotiations scheduled for today, both SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP are working independently. They are expected to reconvene later to discuss scheduling, indicating that progress is being made, albeit with no concrete timeline established.
As talks continue, industry insiders and stakeholders remain hopeful that these meetings will pave the way for a mutually beneficial agreement that can bring an end to the ongoing strike in Hollywood.
