In a surprising turn of events, Kevin Feige's highly anticipated Star Wars feature has been officially cancelled. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel Studios boss confirmed that his "Star Wars" movie is no longer moving forward, signaling a shift in his focus towards the numerous films and TV shows within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
During an interview at the Las Vegas premiere of The Marvels, Feige was asked about the status of his Star Wars project, to which he simply replied, "No." This news comes after Feige's initial announcement of his involvement in the Star Wars franchise back in 2019.
The Hollywood Reporter had previously revealed Feige's involvement in developing the Star Wars project, with news breaking in January 2021 that Loki creator Michael Waldron had been hired to pen the script. However, it appears that the landscape has changed since those initial plans were set in motion.
At the time of Feige's meeting with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, and Disney studio co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman, The Rise of Skywalker had not yet hit theaters, and the successful Disney+ series The Mandalorian, along with the beloved character Baby Yoda, had not yet taken the streaming platform by storm.
"I love that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe," Feige stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2019, expressing his excitement and enthusiasm for the Star Wars universe.
Lucasfilm has had its fair share of projects that were ultimately shelved, including a planned trilogy from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss, as well as a Rogue Squadron film directed by Patty Jenkins. Feige's Star Wars project now joins these ranks, adding to the list of missed opportunities for the beloved franchise.
Despite the cancellation of Feige's project, Lucasfilm remains dedicated to expanding the Star Wars universe on the big screen with a feature film starring Daisy Ridley, reprising her role from The Rise of Skywalker. This upcoming film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, known for her work on Ms. Marvel. Additionally, Lucasfilm has other exciting features in the works, including projects led by The Mandalorian's Dave Filoni and James Mangold.
As Kevin Feige turns his attention back to the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans can expect a multitude of films and TV shows to captivate audiences in the coming years. While the cancellation of his Star Wars project may come as a disappointment to some, it is clear that Feige's creative energy will continue to shape the superhero realm that has become synonymous with the MCU.
