In an exciting development for fans, streaming platform Hulu is reportedly in early discussions to revive the beloved series, "Prison Break." The new incarnation of the hit Fox drama is set to be written and executive produced by Elgin James, the acclaimed co-creator and showrunner of "Mayans M.C." This project comes as James embarks on his first endeavor following the conclusion of the popular FX series.
Sources familiar with the project reveal that the new "Prison Break" series will delve into a fresh chapter within the established Prison Break universe. However, it is anticipated that the central characters from the original series, Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (played by Dominic Purcell), will not be featured.
The upcoming installment stems from James' recent deal with 20th Television, a subsidiary of Disney Television Studios that produced the original show and serves as the studio for the new spin-off. Joining James as executive producers are Paul Scheuring, the creator of "Prison Break," as well as Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, who all served as executive producers for the original series.
"Prison Break" originally premiered in 2005 and captivated audiences with its gripping storyline centered around Michael Scofield's daring plan to free his wrongfully accused brother from prison. The show aired for four seasons on Fox, culminating in a made-for-TV film titled "The Final Break" that provided closure to the plotline. In 2015, a limited series sequel was released, featuring Miller and Purcell reprising their roles for a fifth season on Fox.
After several years of speculation about a possible continuation, plans for the return of "Prison Break" are finally taking shape at Hulu. The streaming platform became the natural home for the series following Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets, including the studio responsible for the show, 20th Television.
Notably, in 2020, Wentworth Miller publicly announced that he had concluded his involvement with "Prison Break" and decided to retire from portraying heterosexual characters, expressing his desire to focus on more authentic representation as an openly gay man.
Elgin James brings valuable experience and creative expertise to the project as the co-creator, executive producer, and showrunner of "Mayans M.C." This critically acclaimed series enjoyed a successful five-season run before concluding in July. James also co-created the Amazon Studios and BBC One series titled "The Outlaws," featuring iconic actor Christopher Walken. Furthermore, his directorial debut, "Little Birds," premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2011 and received recognition from the National Board of Review.
While details of the new "Prison Break" series remain tightly under wraps, fans can eagerly anticipate its arrival on Hulu, where the iconic drama will continue to enthrall audiences with its heart-pounding narrative and high-stakes escapades.
