In a disappointing turn of events for fans, HBO Max has announced the cancellation of its groundbreaking series, "Warrior," after three seasons. However, there is still hope for the show as it has secured a non-exclusive off-net deal with Netflix, potentially introducing it to a new audience.
"Warrior" made its triumphant return for its third season in June, following a two-year hiatus. Initially airing on Cinemax in 2019, the show was given a new lease on life thanks to a dedicated fan campaign. The series boasts one of the few Asian ensembles on television, featuring a talented cast including Andrew Koji, Olivia Cheng, Jason Tobin, Dianne Doan, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Tom Weston-Jones, Hoon Lee, Perry Yung, Langley Kirkwood, Miranda Raison, Chen Tang, Chelsea Muirhead, Mark Dacascos, and Joe Taslim.
Based on a concept by the legendary Bruce Lee, "Warrior" had Shannon Lee, his daughter, serving as one of the executive producers. The series follows the journey of Ah Sahm (played by Andrew Koji), who is torn between his loyalty to his tong and his commitment to his sister Mai Ling. As the United States government intensifies its persecution of Chinese immigrants, the leaders of the San Francisco tongs must fight to preserve their piece of the American Dream, straining to find a new path without causing further division.
The third season of "Warrior" saw executive producers Evan Endicott and Josh Stoddard as showrunners, along with Jonathan Tropper from Tropper Ink, Justin Lin, Danielle Woodrow, and Andrew Schneider representing Perfect Storm Entertainment. Additionally, Shannon Lee, Brad Kane, and Richard Sharkey joined as executive producers. Lillian Yu and Francisca X Hu served as co-executive producers.
Casey Bloys, HBO and HBO Max's programming president, expressed his admiration for the show, stating that "'Warrior' introduced viewers to a distinct world from the past, executed with dynamic action and relevant storytelling, with a brilliant cast led by Andrew Koji."
While the cancellation news has disappointed fans, there is a glimmer of hope as "Warrior" will continue to be available on HBO Max and also make its way onto Netflix through the non-exclusive off-net deal. This presents an opportunity for the series to expand its reach and captivate a broader audience.
The news of "Warrior's" cancellation was first reported by Deadline, leaving fans and supporters of the show expressing their disappointment while eagerly anticipating the show's next chapter on Netflix.
