Greta Gerwig, the director of the hit film Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the iconic character and Ryan Gosling as Ken, has hinted at the potential for a Ken spinoff in a recent interview.

Although neither Warner Bros. nor Mattel have confirmed any plans for a sequel, Gerwig remained elusive when asked about the possibility of a Barbie spinoff centered around Ken. During a 60 Minutes interview with Sharyn Alfonsi, Gerwig responded, "I mean, the truth is, you know... I guess we'll see." While she couldn't provide a definitive answer, Gerwig did not rule out the idea entirely.

In the interview, Gerwig revealed that there was a surplus of material and ideas for Ken during the writing process of Barbie. "We had way too much material for Ken. We would write, and write, and write," Gerwig confessed. This led to speculation about the potential for a standalone movie focusing on Ryan Gosling's character.

Interestingly, Gerwig had previously mentioned that she envisioned Gosling as Ken even before casting him, with his name written into the script. "We wrote his name into the script and everything... and [Gosling's name] was everywhere," Gerwig shared with the New York Times. "And then when we handed them the script, the studio was like 'Oh, it's so wonderful that you know Ryan.' And I was like, 'Oh, I don't know Ryan. I've never met Ryan, I have no idea.'"

While Gosling eventually secured the role of Ken opposite Robbie, who also served as an executive producer on the film, Robbie herself expressed doubts about a potential sequel to Barbie. She emphasized that the film was not written with the intention of being a franchise or a saga. "I think we put everything into this one. We didn't build it to be a trilogy or something," Robbie revealed to the Associated Press. "Greta put everything into this movie, so I can't imagine what would be next."

Barbie, which had a successful theatrical run earlier this year, is set to premiere on streaming platform Max on December 15th, allowing audiences to enjoy the beloved characters in the comfort of their homes. As fans eagerly await the release, discussions about a potential Ken spinoff continue to circulate, fueled by Gerwig's response during the recent interview.

For now, the fate of a Ken-centered movie remains uncertain, with neither Warner Bros. nor Mattel providing any official confirmation. However, with the success of Barbie and the abundance of ideas for the character of Ken, fans may still have a chance to see their favorite toy couple back on the big screen in the near future.
