While the movie may have Western undertones, it delves into the story of Ludvig Kahlen, a Danish officer who embarks on a challenging journey of survival and ambition in 1755.

"The Promised Land," which stars acclaimed actors Mads Mikkelsen and Amanda Collin, takes viewers on a captivating journey through a desolate and lawless terrain. Kahlen, portrayed by Mikkelsen, retires from the German Army with a small pension and a royal warrant to carve out a living in the meager soil of Jutland. Along his path, he encounters small-time thieves, a notorious robber baron, prejudices, and unexpected love.

In a recent interview with NPR's Scott Simon, Arcel discussed the inspirations behind the film and the complex character of Ludvig Kahlen. The Danish filmmaker revealed that he deliberately constructed Kahlen as a protagonist who may initially come across as unlikeable. However, as the story unfolds, viewers gradually develop an affection for him, showcasing the transformative power of love and personal growth.

Arcel explained that Kahlen's relentless ambition drives him to aspire to nobility, which was the only pathway to prosperity during that era. The protagonist's journey is fraught with challenges, including exploiting those who work for him and an unwavering determination to assert his self-importance.

"The Promised Land" also sheds light on the little-known role of the Romani people in the settling of Jutland. Arcel depicts Anmai Mus, one of the few Romani individuals in Denmark at the time, who faces discrimination and suspicion due to her skin color. Her story presents a stark contrast between strength and loneliness, providing a deeper understanding of the characters' struggles.

Furthermore, the film introduces the compelling antagonist De Schinkel, portrayed by an as-yet-unnamed actor, who possesses both power and wealth but remains unloved and dangerous. De Schinkel's encounter with Kahlen further accentuates the clash of personalities and ambitions that ensues.

Working alongside collaborator Mads Mikkelsen, Arcel praised the actor's profound contributions to the film. Mikkelsen's talent and commitment to not only his own role but also the broader story made him an invaluable partner to the director. Arcel highlighted Mikkelsen's grounded and cooperative nature, along with his willingness to go above and beyond in supporting the production.

As an accomplished filmmaker who has also worked on American films, Arcel reflected on the differences between the two industries. He emphasized that, in the United States, filmmakers often find themselves working on studio projects where their artistic vision is compromised for commercial success. This stark contrast has made Arcel lean towards making fewer films in America, preferring the creative freedom he experiences in Danish cinema.

"The Promised Land," directed by Nikolaj Arcel, offers audiences a captivating historical drama filled with ambition, love, and the striking beauty of the Jutland landscape. The film has already generated considerable buzz among movie enthusiasts and is currently playing in theaters, providing an immersive cinematic experience that promises to leave a lasting impact.
