The long-awaited sequel to the 1996 disaster hit "Twister," aptly titled "Twisters," is poised to make a substantial impact at the box office. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung, the film is slated to generate an impressive $50 million to $55 million in its opening weekend across 4,000 theaters in North America.

Starring a talented ensemble including Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos, "Twisters" follows the intense journey of storm chasers facing multiple tornadoes converging over central Oklahoma. With a production budget of $155 million, the success of the film is crucial for its backers at Universal, who hope for a global resonance to justify the hefty price tag.

While its international release by Warner Bros. has already earned $11.5 million from 38 territories, the film is eagerly anticipated in major European markets such as France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom, where it is set to make its debut over the weekend.

The original "Twister" made waves upon its release almost 30 years ago, becoming a massive commercial success and garnering two Oscar nominations. However, early reviews for "Twisters" indicate that it falls slightly short of its predecessor's glory. With a commendable 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Variety's chief film critic Owen Gleiberman notes that while the sequel provides moments of spectacle and showcases the magnetism of Glen Powell, it lacks the groundbreaking impact of the original.

As the domestic box office recovers from a slow start to the summer season, "Twisters" enters an environment of growing momentum. Disney's Pixar sequel "Inside Out 2" has emerged as the biggest success of the year, accumulating $1.348 million worldwide so far. Additionally, "Despicable Me 4" from Universal and Illumination Studios has garnered an impressive $434 million globally. Meanwhile, the indie release "Longlegs," with its occult-tinged horror theme, surprised with a strong debut, earning $22.6 million and becoming one of the biggest indie starts to date.

Looking ahead, the highly anticipated Marvel collaboration "Deadpool & Wolverine," featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is set to make its mark on July 26, and industry experts predict it will continue the trend of success into August. With these promising releases and a renewed energy in the box office, "Twisters" rides into theaters hoping to capture audiences around the world and leave a lasting impact.
