Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the hit Netflix series "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story," has stood by his show in response to criticism from Erik Menendez, one of the show's main subjects. The true-crime drama, which chronicles the real-life case of brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez, has been making waves since its release, currently holding the top spot on Netflix in the U.S.
Despite not having access to Netflix in prison, Erik Menendez, who is incarcerated alongside his brother in California, shared his disappointment with how he and Lyle were depicted in the series through a statement posted by his wife. Erik expressed his concern over the portrayal of their story, especially highlighting what he perceived as damaging characterizations and misrepresentations of the abuse they suffered.
Addressing Erik Menendez's criticism, showrunner Ryan Murphy pointed out that a significant portion of the series focuses on the abuse allegations made by the Menendez brothers. Murphy emphasized that the show handles these sensitive topics carefully and gives voice to the brothers' perspectives. He defended the portrayal, noting that discussing sexual abuse can be controversial but is crucial in shedding light on important issues.
"Monsters" has also faced backlash from viewers over scenes implying an incestuous relationship between the adult brothers. While Erik did not directly address this aspect, journalist Robert Rand debunked the false portrayal of the brothers' relationship, suggesting it was a misinterpretation rooted in rumors during the trial. Murphy echoed this sentiment, explaining that the show presents various perspectives and theories surrounding the case, including those from different individuals involved.
