### Russell Simmons Sues Warner Bros. Discovery Over Documentary 'On the Record'

Music mogul Russell Simmons has taken legal action against Warner Bros. Discovery, alleging that the documentary "On the Record" is defamatory. The lawsuit, filed in New York state court, accuses the filmmakers of ignoring evidence that contradicts the assault allegations made by several women. Simmons is pursuing claims of defamation, invasion of privacy, and false advertising, seeking $20 million in damages and demanding the removal of the documentary from all platforms.

Produced by Oscar-nominated directors Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering under Jane Doe Films, "On the Record" showcases the stories of women who accuse Simmons of sexual assault, including ex-Def Jam executive Drew Dixon, activist Sil Lai Abrams, and screenwriter Jenny Lumet. Oprah Winfrey was initially an executive producer before she withdrew from the project, citing creative differences. Subsequently, Apple TV+ also pulled out as a distributor, and HBO Max acquired the documentary as its first-ever festival acquisition.

Simmons' lawsuit asserts that significant information—such as interviews with over 20 witnesses and nine polygraph tests—was ignored by the filmmakers and Warner Bros. Discovery. These pieces of evidence, according to Simmons' lawyer Imran Ansari, could have challenged the narrative presented in the documentary. The evidence was allegedly shown to John Stankey, the former CEO of Warner Media, and Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, who reportedly chose to disregard it.

On the Record received critical acclaim at its Sundance premiere, earning multiple standing ovations and a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Hollywood Reporter's Beandrea July described the film as "a stunning feat of complexity that's both contained and expansive." However, Simmons contends that the film's narrative has caused significant harm to his reputation and career, prompting this legal battle.
