The acclaimed director, known for his masterpieces such as "The Godfather" trilogy and "Apocalypse Now," went to incredible lengths to bring his passion project to life.

In a preview of the film featured in Vanity Fair, Coppola revealed that he had rewritten the script a staggering 300 times before deciding to self-finance the project. To raise the necessary funds, he sold a portion of his winery estate in Northern California, a testament to his dedication and belief in the film's potential.

Inspired by H.G. Wells' "Things to Come," "Megalopolis" takes place in a New York City-like metropolis devastated by a catastrophic event. The story follows an idealistic architect, played by Adam Driver, who seeks to rebuild the city into something greater than it was before. Opposing him is Giancarlo Esposito's character, a corrupt mayor determined to maintain the status quo.

Coppola shared the long journey of developing the screenplay, dismissing rumors that he had been working on it for 40 years. Instead, he collected notes and clippings over time, gradually crafting the story. He initially envisioned a Roman epic, which eventually evolved into a tale set in modern America, reflecting his exploration of personal style throughout his career.

The production of "Megalopolis" concluded last year, and on March 28, it was screened for the first time at the Universal CityWalk IMAX Theater in Los Angeles. The viewing was attended by prominent figures in the film industry, including studio heads, distributors, and buyers.

Coppola's deep fascination with Ancient Rome shines through in "Megalopolis." In an Instagram post, he expressed how the Roman Republic served as an inspiration for both America and his upcoming film. He emphasized his interest in the struggle between political parties during that time and how the ambitions of a few powerful individuals eroded the foundation of the Republic.

As the film heads to Cannes, it will be seeking distribution opportunities. According to recent reports, "Megalopolis" is inching closer to a deal in France with the distribution company Le Pacte.

The premiere of "Megalopolis" at the renowned Cannes Film Festival is highly anticipated, as audiences eagerly await the visionary work of Francis Ford Coppola. With its powerful themes and stellar cast, the film promises to be a captivating exploration of ambition, corruption, and the human desire for progress in the face of adversity.
