Verizon, one of the leading telecommunications companies, is facing a proposed settlement of $100 million in a class-action lawsuit filed in New Jersey. The settlement aims to compensate eligible Verizon customers, who had postpaid service between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023, for being charged an undisclosed fee in addition to advertised monthly rates.

The lawsuit alleges that Verizon engaged in deceptive and unfair practices by adding a monthly administrative charge to customers' bills and progressively increasing the fee over time. While Verizon has not admitted any wrongdoing, the company has agreed to the substantial settlement, which also includes modifications to the customer agreement to provide transparency regarding the administrative charge.

However, it is important to note that prepaid Verizon customers are not part of this class-action lawsuit.

Affected Verizon customers have until April 15, 2024, to file a claim in order to receive compensation. The settlement offers eligible customers up to $100 in restitution. The amount each customer receives will depend on two factors: $15 is guaranteed, and an additional $1 will be awarded for each month the customer was charged the undisclosed fee. It should be noted that the initial $15 payment may be lower depending on the total number of customers who file claims.

Customers who wish to opt-out of the lawsuit must do so before February 20, 2024, and will not be eligible for compensation. Details on how to file a claim or opt-out can be found on the dedicated website set up for the class-action lawsuit.

Verizon's decision to settle this lawsuit demonstrates their commitment to addressing customer concerns and rectifying misleading billing practices. By revising the customer agreement and offering compensation, the company aims to restore trust and maintain strong customer relationships.

The proposed settlement is subject to approval by the court overseeing the case. If approved, it will mark a significant step for Verizon in resolving this legal matter and providing restitution for affected customers.
