In his first year at BikeRadar, Tom Law, a presenter and writer for the BikeRadar YouTube channel, has compiled his Gear of the Year picks, featuring some top-notch high-budget options. From bikes to components, Tom has been spoiled with a range of standout gear that has impressed him throughout the year.

One of Tom's favorite bikes is the Norco Fluid, which he considers to be among the best bikes he has ridden. Another standout for him is SRAM's new AXS Transmission groupsets, which have left a lasting impression. These high-quality options have earned a spot in Tom's coveted Gear of the Year list for 2023.

Among the highlighted gear is the 7mesh Northwoods Windshell jacket, priced at £170 / $180. Despite being lightweight, breathable, and water-resistant, its standout feature for Tom is its ability to pack down super-small. This has been a revelation for him as a minimalist rider who prefers carrying minimal kit.

Tom also highlights the SRAM HS2 Rotors, priced at £52-65 / $53-69, as a great-value upgrade for brakes. While not particularly fancy or lightweight, these rotors have made a significant difference in improving SRAM's brakes. Tom mentions that they have largely solved the quibbles he had with the G2 RS brakes on the Norco Fluid.

Switching gears to pedals, Tom surprises himself as he becomes a fan of Crankbrothers' Mallet Trail/DH pedals priced at £179.99 / $179.99. Initially struggling with the stock cleats due to a weak and twisted ankle, Tom found that switching to the optional easy-release cleats made a world of difference. This newfound appreciation for Crankbrothers' pedals has extended to the Mallet Trail pedals as well.

Tom's Gear of the Year selection also includes the NOBL TR35 x Berd spoke wheels. While they may be pricey, these wheels offer a unique aesthetic appeal. At a measured weight of 1,522g for the pair, they are surprisingly light for downcountry and trail use. Tom praises their vibration damping and improved acceleration, which transformed the performance of the Norco Fluid.

Finally, Tom briefly mentions his experience with Öhlins' new RXC34 m.1 fork and TXC2Air rear shock. Despite only having a few hours of trail time on these products, Tom was impressed by the RXC34's precision, resembling a RockShox Pike but lighter. The control from the new OTX14 damper and the small-bump compliance of the TXC2Air left a positive impression on him.

As Tom eagerly awaits his longer-term test setup, it is clear that his passion for mountain biking and his enthusiasm for the latest gear shines through his Gear of the Year selections. Stay tuned for more detailed reviews and updates on these high-budget favorites from Tom Law and BikeRadar.
