Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has made history by setting a new world record for the most time spent in space. According to a report in Sky News, Kononenko spent over 878 days and 12 hours outside the Earth's atmosphere, totaling nearly two and a half years.
The 59-year-old surpassed the previous record held by his compatriot Gennady Padalka, who had spent a total of 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes, and 48 seconds across five space journeys before retiring in 2017. Kononenko celebrated his achievement aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where he is currently stationed.
In an interview with Russian news agency TASS, Kononenko shared his passion for space exploration, stating, "I fly into space to do what I love, not to set records. I've dreamt of and aspired to become a cosmonaut since I was a child. That interest - the opportunity to fly into space, to live and work in orbit - motivates me to continue flying."
Mr. Kononenko expressed his pride, stating, "I am proud of all my achievements, but I am more proud that the record for the total duration of human stay in space is still held by a Russian cosmonaut."
As the commander of the Russian space agency Roscosmos cosmonaut corps, Kononenko is on his fifth space mission. Together with fellow Russian Nikolai Chub and NASA astronaut Loral O'Hara, he began his current mission to the International Space Station on September 15, 2023.
On June 5 of this year, Kononenko will accomplish an even more remarkable feat in space exploration, as he will complete 1000 days in space, becoming the first person to achieve this milestone. Furthermore, when his current expedition ends on September 23, he will have spent a total of 1,110 days in space.
Although international cooperation has faced challenges, the ISS project remains a significant collaboration between the United States and Russia. The cross-flight program between Roscosmos and NASA to the ISS has recently been extended until 2025, signaling continued cooperation and unity in space exploration endeavors.
Oleg Kononenko's record-breaking accomplishment showcases the unwavering dedication and passion of cosmonauts like himself, who strive to push the boundaries of human exploration and inspire future generations.
