AI startup Pika Labs has secured a remarkable $55 million in funding as it unveils its highly-anticipated Pika 1.0 version. The funding will be utilized to further enhance the platform's generative video capabilities, setting it apart in the AI text-to-video generator market.
Co-founded by former Stanford University Ph.D. students Demi Guo and Chenlin Meng, Pika Labs brings together their expertise in Artificial Intelligence. Guo, who previously worked in Meta's AI research division, and Meng, with a background in generative AI technology research, are determined to revolutionize the video creation process.
Pika 1.0 introduces a cutting-edge AI model capable of generating and editing videos in a wide range of styles, including 3D animation, anime, cartoon, and cinematic. The upgraded platform also offers an improved web experience, making it more user-friendly and accessible.
The recent funding milestones for Pika Labs were achieved through pre-seed and seed rounds led by Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross, followed by a Series A round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Notable investors include industry leaders such as Elad Gil, Adam D'Angelo (Founder and CEO of Quora), Andrej Karpathy, Clem Delangue (Co-Founder and CEO of Hugging Face and Partner at Factorial Capital), Craig Kallman (CEO of Atlantic Records), Alex Chung (Co-Founder of Giphy), Aravind Srinivas (CEO of Perplexity), Mateusz Staniszewski (CEO of ElevenLabs), and Keith Peiris (CEO of Tome). Venture firms such as Homebrew, Conviction Capital, SV Angel, and Ben's Bites also contributed to the funding round.
Despite being in the pre-release stage for the past six months, Pika Labs has already garnered approximately half a million users who generate millions of videos per week. The launch of Pika 1.0 is expected to significantly amplify the user base and content output. Interested individuals can join the waitlist for the app on Pika Labs' website.
Acknowledging the complexity and resource-intensive nature of video creation, Pika Labs aims to redefine the video-making process. The company's vision is to develop an effortless and accessible interface for video creation powered by advanced technology.
While early developments in generative AI images may have been underwhelming, the field has rapidly progressed, and generative video technology seems poised to follow suit. Though creating videos is inherently more resource-intensive than generating photos, Pika Labs' previously released video demonstrates promising advancements in generative video technology.
Pika Labs' successful funding round and the launch of Pika 1.0 highlight the interest and confidence in the potential of generative video platforms. As the company continues to refine and expand its offering, it aims to empower individuals to create high-quality videos effortlessly and unlock new possibilities in the realm of entertainment.
