In a world filled with advanced mirrorless camera systems, one photographer stands firm in their decision to stick with their trusty DSLR. In a thoughtful reflection, the photographer highlights the reasons why they feel no pressure to upgrade to a mirrorless system anytime soon.

Digital photography has come a long way since the introduction of the Fujix DS line in the late 1980s, marking the dawn of fully digital cameras. Today, photographers and enthusiasts have a plethora of options to choose from, ranging from DSLRs to mirrorless cameras and medium format systems. The choice ultimately depends on one's budget and area of expertise.

While some photographers find excitement in keeping up with the latest technology and frequently upgrading their gear, there are others who take a more pragmatic approach. They view their cameras as indispensable tools, upgrading only when necessary. For the photographer in question, it's all about the image rather than being driven by the latest features and innovations.

The photographer shares their experience with the Nikon D850, a camera they deliberately chose for its impressive specifications, such as its 45.7 megapixels, superior low light performance, focus shift capabilities, and the added bonus of a tilting touchscreen. These features still hold value today, even with the constant release of newer camera models.

Despite a slight temptation to switch to mirrorless during the pandemic, the photographer ultimately decided to stick with their DSLR. The announcement of the Nikon Z9 caught their attention, but upon closer comparison, they found that the D850 still met their needs. The main draw of mirrorless for many photographers seemed to be the 8K video resolution, which wasn't a priority for the photographer at the time.

Furthermore, the photographer emphasizes the attachment they form to their equipment, including lenses with sentimental value. For instance, they cherish the Nikkor 70-200 2.8E FL ED VR lens for its role in a specific series of portraits. Upgrading to a mirrorless system would require parting ways with this lens, which they find difficult to justify. The photographer's journey with their camera becomes a routine, allowing them to focus solely on the creative process.

Although there have been significant advancements in mirrorless technology, with rumors of new releases looming, the photographer still appreciates the benefits of DSLRs. They value the optical viewfinder, which provides a direct optical view of the scene, and the longer battery life offered by DSLRs. Ultimately, the decision to upgrade or stick with a DSLR lies in the hands of camera manufacturers and the innovations they bring to the market.

While many photographers have embraced mirrorless cameras, the Nikon D850's continued production since its release in 2017 reassures the photographer that they are not lagging behind. They are prepared to switch when the right time comes, but until then, they remain content with their DSLR.

As each photographer has their own priorities and preferences, the decision to switch or stay with a DSLR system varies. It's a matter of personal choice and finding the equipment that best suits one's needs and artistic vision.
