In a remarkable incident, a 40-year-old Las Vegas resident with type 1 diabetes has credited his Apple Watch for saving his life. Josh Furman, who typically relies on his insulin pump to alert him when his blood sugar gets low, found himself unconscious and in serious danger when his blood sugar plummeted to dangerous levels.
Furman recounted the incident, explaining that he passed out at home and hit his head on the floor. Fortunately, his Apple Watch came to his rescue by calling emergency services automatically. "I don't know how long I was out for, but when I woke up, the Apple Watch had basically called 911, the paramedics," Furman said. Although he was unable to communicate due to his impaired speech, the watch's GPS enabled emergency personnel to locate him promptly.
Thanks to the emergency contacts set up in his watch, Furman was able to reach out to his mother, who informed the 911 operator about her son's medical condition. "I don't think people know enough about their Apple Watch to realize what it can actually do with the fall detection (feature)," Furman emphasized, urging users to activate the feature on their iPhones.
Fall detection is a key feature in the Apple Watch SE series 4 and later models. In order for the device to automatically initiate contact with emergency services, the feature must be turned on. When a hard fall is detected and the user remains immobile for approximately one minute, the device will automatically call for assistance.
Apple also includes the option for users to add emergency contacts via the Medical ID setting. In Furman's case, his emergency contacts received a message with his location and were informed that 911 had been called.
"This incident is a testament to the life-saving capabilities of the Apple Watch," Furman expressed. "Without the features I use, like the blood glucose sensor and fall detection, I wouldn't have gotten the watch, and now with fall detection, it honestly saved my life."
Furman revealed that this was not the first instance where his watch had contacted emergency services on his behalf, but it was the first time he was completely unconscious and reliant on the device for assistance. His story highlights the importance of utilizing smartwatch technology and making use of its potentially life-saving features.
Apple's commitment to constantly improving the functionality and safety features of its products has undoubtedly made a significant impact on users' lives. The incident serves as a reminder for individuals, especially those with medical conditions or elderly individuals, to explore and understand the capabilities of their Apple Watch for both their health and safety.
The incident involving Josh Furman and his Apple Watch has shed light on the remarkable potential of wearable technology platforms. As more individuals become aware of the life-saving features of smartwatches, it is expected that such devices will become increasingly prevalent in safeguarding individuals' wellbeing in emergency situations.
