In November, Google encountered a technical glitch that resulted in the loss of user data on Google Drive. Responding to the flood of complaints from affected users, Google has released a step-by-step guide to assist users in reclaiming their lost files.

To initiate the recovery process, users must ensure they have the latest version of Google Drive for desktop app (version 85.0.13.0 or newer) installed on their Windows or macOS system. By running the app's recovery tool, accessed by clicking the Drive icon in the menu bar or system tray, holding down Shift, clicking Settings, and choosing Recover from backups, users can begin the recovery process. A notice will appear notifying users that "Recovery has started." Upon completion, all restored files will be organized in a new folder called Google Drive recovery.

If users encounter a "Not enough disk space" message while using the recovery tool, they can free up space on their devices to proceed with the recovery process.

In the event that the first method does not yield satisfactory results, users can explore alternative solutions. Google provides support on using the command line interface and offers troubleshooting tips on their support page. However, it is essential to have the latest version of Drive for desktop installed before attempting these advanced methods.

If all else fails, Google suggests one final method for data recovery. This method involves checking if users have disconnected their account or cleared out the Drive cache from their computers. If users have a Windows backup or a Time Machine backup on macOS, detailed instructions can be found in the Additional troubleshooting options for data recovery section on the Google Drive help page.

While utilizing Google's suggested methods does not guarantee the recovery of lost files, there is still hope. Users may find that these techniques can potentially rescue files that were believed to be lost forever.

If, despite all attempts, users still cannot locate their missing files, Google encourages them to provide feedback through the Google Drive app. Users should ensure to include the hashtag #DFD84 and select the option to include diagnostic logs to assist in the resolution process.
