In a companywide memo obtained by CNN, Google CEO Sundar Pichai warned employees to expect further layoffs as the tech giant undergoes a restructuring to prioritize artificial intelligence and other areas beyond. Pichai stated that the job cuts, which have already impacted hundreds of Google employees in recent weeks, will not be on the same scale as last year's layoffs that resulted in a reduction of 12,000 employees.
While some parts of the business will remain unaffected by the changes, Pichai acknowledged that certain teams will need to make resource allocation decisions throughout the year, potentially resulting in job impacts. However, he reassured employees that the company remains committed to supporting affected individuals and helping them find alternative positions within Google or elsewhere.
Pichai emphasized the company's ambitious goals for the year and the need to make tough choices in order to create the necessary capacity for investments. He stated that these decisions are aimed at simplifying execution and driving velocity in specific areas.
The memo came amidst reports that Google's subsidiary, YouTube, is implementing layoffs affecting approximately 100 roles within its partnerships organization responsible for YouTube content creator outreach. Although CNN has not independently verified these layoffs, a Google spokesperson confirmed their occurrence.
As Google continues its focus on artificial intelligence and expands into new ventures, these recent developments demonstrate the company's commitment to adapt its workforce in alignment with its evolving strategic priorities.
