In a recent report by The Wall Street Journal, it has been suggested that executives at SpaceX have started questioning whether the erratic behavior of their founder and CEO, Elon Musk, is connected to drug use. The publication claims that Musk has allegedly engaged in the recreational use of LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, and psychedelic mushrooms for several years, often at parties. Some unnamed sources cited in the article reveal that they have attended these parties with Musk, where attendees are required to sign non-disclosure agreements or surrender their phones before entry.
This is not the first time such concerns have been raised. The article mentions a previous incident in which Musk was seen smoking marijuana and drinking whiskey during a podcast hosted by Joe Rogan in 2018. The incident led to criticism from NASA, with whom SpaceX collaborates. Due to their contract with the government agency, SpaceX is obliged to comply with a federal drug-free workplace policy.
Musk took to social media platform X to respond to The Wall Street Journal's claims, stating that he agreed to undergo three years of random drug testing following the podcast appearance at NASA's request. He emphasized that no trace quantities of drugs or alcohol were found in his system during these tests. Musk's attorney, Alex Spiro, further declared that his client is regularly and randomly drug tested at SpaceX and has never failed a test.
The Journal's report also mentions concerns raised by individuals close to Musk, expressing worries about the potential impact of his alleged drug use on his health and various business ventures. These concerns reached a peak in 2017 when Musk exhibited slurred speech and delivered a rambling speech during a SpaceX meeting discussing the company's new rocket. While the paper did not confirm if Musk was under the influence at the time, it is reported that SpaceX executives privately wondered if drugs were involved during the meeting.
Board members of Tesla, a public company of which Musk is also the CEO, have also reportedly voiced concerns about his behavior. The Journal states that Tesla board chair Robyn Denholm sought assistance from Musk's brother, Kimbal, in addressing the issue without explicitly referencing drugs.
Aside from drugs, some have raised questions about other potential factors contributing to Musk's unusual behavior. Lack of sleep has been speculated, as Musk has previously admitted to sleeping at both Tesla and SpaceX offices. Mental health has also been mentioned, as Musk has publicly disclosed his struggles with depression and bipolar disorder.
The Independent has reached out to Musk, Spiro, and SpaceX for comment on these allegations. While the claims made in The Wall Street Journal's report have sparked a debate regarding Musk's conduct and its potential impact on his businesses, it remains to be seen whether any further actions or consequences will arise from these concerns.
