Humane, an artificial intelligence startup founded by former Apple designers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, has announced its inaugural product, the Humane AI Pin. The company has managed to secure over $200 million in funding from prominent investors such as Microsoft, Tiger Global, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

The Humane AI Pin, priced at $699, is a lapel pin that aims to replace traditional smartphones. With voice controls, users can make calls, send texts, and access information without the need for a handheld device. The pin also includes a laser display that transforms the user's palm into a miniature screen, capable of showing the time, date, or nearby information.

Unlike other devices, the Humane AI Pin does not require constant voice activation. It remains dormant until engaged with through voice, touch, gesture, or the laser ink display. The company emphasizes privacy by ensuring that it does not constantly listen or record user interactions.

To access the full functionality of the pin, customers will need to subscribe to a $24-per-month data plan with T-Mobile. This ensures a dedicated phone number for the AI Pin, allowing it to operate independently from a smartphone. This freedom brings added convenience and flexibility to users' daily lives.

Humane initially drew attention in March when it secured $100 million in financing from Microsoft, LG's venture arm, and Tiger Global, even before revealing any product details. The recent announcement of the AI Pin signifies the company's continued innovation and growth in the AI market.

Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, in a launch video on the company's website, showcased the AI Pin's advanced features. Powered by a Qualcomm chipset, the device includes a built-in speaker and camera. A light indicates when these functions are active. Users can capture photos and videos by double-tapping the pin, which can then be viewed through Humane's web app.

The demonstration also revealed the AI Pin's ability to translate spoken conversations in real-time, converting Spanish to English and vice versa. The device provides access to AI services from various companies such as Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI, offering features like music playback from popular sci-fi films and information retrieval powered by large language models.

Humane is set to commence pre-orders for the AI Pin on November 16th. With its sleek design and innovative features, the device aims to cater to tech-savvy consumers seeking an alternative to traditional smartphones.

The successful funding rounds and the introduction of the AI Pin solidify Humane's position as a prominent player in the AI industry. With the support of major investors and a strong product offering, the company is poised to make a significant impact in the market.
