Apple, known for its conservative approach to artificial intelligence (AI), has quietly released MLX, a set of frameworks and model libraries designed to enable generative AI applications on its MacBooks. Developed by the company's machine learning research team, MLX allows developers to build efficient AI models that run on Apple Silicon chips.

The MLX framework and MLX Data, a deep learning model library, are now accessible through open-source repositories such as GitHub and PyPI. Inspired by frameworks like PyTorch, Jax, and ArrayFire, MLX differentiates itself by featuring shared memory capabilities, which ensures tasks can be executed on supported devices, including CPUs and GPUs, without the need to move data.

The goal of MLX is to offer developers an easy-to-use framework while providing enough power to train advanced AI models like Meta's Llama and Stable Diffusion, as reported by Computerworld. These frameworks and model libraries play a crucial role in powering many AI applications currently available in the market.

Awni Hannun, a machine learning researcher at Apple, highlighted MLX Data as a versatile package for efficient data loading, compatible with MLX, PyTorch, and Jax frameworks. The Verge has reached out to Apple for further information regarding the release.

In the past, Apple has incorporated AI technology into its products, mainly focusing on machine learning applications. However, the company has been relatively cautious in pursuing popular generative AI applications, unlike its competitors, such as Microsoft and Google. This recent release of MLX indicates Apple's intention to expand its involvement in the AI field.

According to reports, Apple began working on foundational models in September to explore their integration across its services. The company's strategic move towards developing AI capabilities aligns with the growing demand for advanced AI technologies in various industries. With the introduction of MLX, Apple aims to empower developers to create powerful AI applications that can harness the potential of its MacBooks and Apple Silicon.

As Apple continues to push the boundaries of technological innovation, the release of MLX marks another significant step in the company's AI journey. With increased support for advanced AI models, Apple is poised to unlock new possibilities and opportunities for both developers and users of its products.
