Apple has recently announced the expansion of its self-service repair program, enabling iPhone 15 users and owners of newer M2-powered MacBooks to repair their own devices. Accompanying this release is the introduction of "Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair," a web-based diagnostics tool designed to assist users in testing their devices for optimal functionality.
The diagnostics tool, now available in the United States, offers a range of tests that allow users to troubleshoot their devices effectively. By initiating diagnostics mode on the device in question and entering its serial number into a secondary device, users can follow Apple's instructions to identify and address any issues. These tests include hardware and software version checks, detection of display anomalies such as pixel irregularities and multi-touch problems, assessment of camera performance, Face ID functionality, and audio output quality.
While Apple emphasizes that the diagnostics tools are intended for individuals with knowledge and expertise in repairing Apple devices, it provides them with the same testing capabilities as Apple authorized service providers and those affiliated with Apple's Independent Repair Provider initiative.
In addition to the introduction of the diagnostics tool, Apple is expanding its self-service repair program to cover a broader range of devices. Initially limited to the 13-inch M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, the program now includes various M2-based models such as the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, the 15-inch MacBook Air, the Mac Mini, the Mac Pro, and the Mac Studio.
Furthermore, Apple's self-service repair program is expanding its coverage to encompass 24 more European countries. Countries such as Croatia, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland, among others, now have access to the program. In total, the self-service repair program is now available in 33 countries, supporting 24 languages and catering to the repair needs of 35 Apple products. However, it is important to note that Apple Diagnostics for Self Service Repair is currently exclusive to the United States and is expected to expand to Europe in the coming year.
Apple's commitment to enhancing the self-service repair experience demonstrates its dedication to expanding accessibility and empowering users to take ownership of their device repairs. With expanded device coverage, improved diagnostics capabilities, and availability in more countries, Apple's self-service repair program aims to provide users with greater convenience and control over their device maintenance and repair needs.
