Apple has updated its iOS 17 page on its website to inform users that the highly anticipated AirPlay feature for hotel room TVs has been delayed until next year. Originally slated for release later this year, Apple now states that the feature will be included in an update in 2024. While no specific timeframe was given, it is expected to be added in the first half of next year.
The AirPlay feature will allow iPhone users to establish a wireless connection with their hotel room TV by scanning a QR code. This will enable them to effortlessly stream videos, photos, and music from their iPhone onto the bigger screen. Apple's move comes as a response to Google, which already offers a similar feature on select hotel TVs through Chromecast.
In June, Apple announced that IHG Hotels & Resorts, the owner of Holiday Inn, would be one of the first hotel chains to adopt the AirPlay feature. Additionally, LG confirmed its support as one of the early manufacturers of hotel room TVs to include the AirPlay functionality.
However, some skeptics doubt the widespread adoption of this feature in hotels. Comparisons are drawn to previous initiatives like the integration of gym equipment with the health app, which never gained broad traction. It is argued that Apple often overestimates the speed at which entire industries integrate with their technology.
Critics question the practicality of choosing a hotel based on AirPlay support, suggesting that bringing an Apple TV and an HDMI cable remains a more reliable option for those in need of AirPlay in hotel rooms.
Implementing the AirPlay feature in hotel room TVs does present challenges. It raises questions such as whether the connection will be wifi direct to ensure security, whether the hotel TV will be connected to an internal network, and what telemetry and logging will be available. Additionally, contingency plans need to be considered in case issues arise during usage.
Despite potential hurdles, Apple remains committed to providing seamless AirPlay functionality in hotel rooms. As the company's iOS 17.2 update approaches, users eagerly anticipate the addition of this feature to enhance their hotel room entertainment experience.
In other news, Senator Ron Wyden has expressed concerns about foreign governments using push notifications to surveil smartphone users. Best Buy is currently running a weekend sale, and Apple's iOS 17.2 update is set to bring a variety of exciting new features to iPhones.
